“This is the perfect addition to our collection of fine quality hand crafted boats. We are pleased to be associated with such a fine heritage” Nancy Cann, President Crusader Yacht Sales

Malö Yachts boast features taken from generations of sailing experience:

A deep, uncluttered and well protected cockpit is the first thing you’ll notice upon stepping aboard.

Beautiful sheer lines and powerful rigs are a prime factor in the serious sailing performance of a Malö yacht.

Reinforced Targa-arch supports the mainsheet traveler to keep loose lines (and heads) out of danger, while also serving as the ideal support for grab rails, the spray-hood, cockpit canopy and night illumination.

A careful design to make use of every space on board will be your best friend on longer passages.

Highest quality materials are used including teak, mahogany, hand laid FRP, and fittings that are the best the market offers.

Production quality, design and engineering exceed current and future classification requirements.

The yard is located in Kungsviken - the Bay of Kings, and the yachts built there show their heritage of over 60 years of refinement. Currently run by Lars Olsson, Malö takes pride in the individuality of the vessels turned out of their yard - and the concept that ‘no two are alike’. With each yacht painstakingly crafted by hand, Malö is an ideal yard for an owner with custom requirements.

When you’re in the market for a new offshore sailing yacht, you’re bound to see some fabulous quality coming from the European builders, and the Swedish vessels are frankly amongst the best!

With 4 Malö models in sizes from 37 to 54 feet, there are plenty of configurations and options for a wide variety of sailing goals. And you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the prices for a top-quality customized Malö with amazing standard equipment already on board!

Call Crusader today at 410-269-0939 for more details.

Scott Taylor, CPYB, had the pleasure of working with the Crafton family in 2002. His charge was to assist them in the purchase of a durable and safe cruising cutter that would accommodate a family of five. After numerous boat evaluations and shopping around, they settled on a 43’ Hans Christian, rigged as a ketch. After the survey and seatrial process the boat was deemed appropriate for the Crafton’s adventure. Little did I know that they would be circumnavigating; the Crafton’s are “low-key” in that regard not having completely shared their aspirations with me. You can imagine his surprise and pleasure when he started receiving emails from exotic ports around the world!

Through persistence and remarkable cooperation, “Nueva Vida” is returned to the Chesapeake within 12 miles of their point of purchase.

What’s a Bruckmann, Anyway?
By Gary Reich

What’s a Bruckmann, Anyway?

By Gary Reich

You Know, there are tons of boats out there, and I’m not half bad at picking them out, but when I saw an ad for a Bruckmann 34e during Prop Talk’s layout process a couple of months ago, I had to investigate. Crusader Yachts in Annapolis happens to be the East Coast dealer for the brand, so I got in touch with Nancy Cann and arranged for a ride.

You may not recognize the brand name, but you’ll certainly notice the designer’s: Mark Ellis. Ellis was an apprentice at the famous powerboat design offices of C. Raymond Hunt and takes many cues from his drawing table. Lately, Ellis has turned his eye toward Bruckmann Yachts of Mississauga, Ontario (Canada), where he’s turning out designs for the semi-custom firm.

I headed down to Port Annapolis for a ride on a hot and sunny June day, and the boat was immediately noticeable from a distance: lots of beautiful teak structural units and accents, a glossy navy hull, and a smart pocket-cruiser design.

As we motored into the Severn River out of Back Creek, what was most evident was the boat’s ability to rise out of being a displacement hull to planning at only 12 knots with help of the quiet 440-horsepower Yanmar diesel. Even with a moderate chop, the boat handled smoothly and turned without the usual rolling of similar hull designs. In short; a beautiful ride.

Bruckmann’s full line is available from Crusader Yachts (crusaderyachts.com), where you can find out more about the 34e (there’s a beautiful one in stock) and all of Bruckmann’s other offerings.

Thanks to PropTalk Magazine for allowing us to publish this on our website.

I recently completed the sale of an extremely nice BRISTOL CHANNEL CUTTER to long-time clients David and Ellen Dawson of Haverford, Pa. I was also working on behalf of the sellers, Bob and Lois Plank who, like the Dawson’s, have owned a series of cruising sailboats over the years. I owe thanks to both parties for their confidence and long term support (totaling eight transactions)“Longsparrow” was surveyed by Kelsey/Turner Associates of Annapolis, and was proven very sound, and sold at her contract price.

Because this 1984 boat was unique, establishing fair market value for the bank was a bit of a challenge. In this case the published numbers were incorrectly low. By working closely with Laurie Kiser of Just Boat Loans, we were able to help the bank understand the true value of the boat. This was done by presenting the history of the builder Sam Morse and also by documenting the many upgrades made by the sellers. The Dawsons were pleased with the loan. The Planks also understood the importance of being able to establish a fair market value to the bank – without it, selling the boat would have been much more difficult.

Hopefully this points to a thawing out in the credit world! It definitely points to the one of the many ways the services of a professional broker can help buyer and seller achieve their goals.

On sea trials we pushed the new Yanmar diesel harder than the seller was accustomed as is usually the case in ascertaining if the cooling system is up to snuff. No problems even with 83 degree water! We were however limited to sailing in about five knots of breeze. Fortunately the sailing characteristics of these Bristol Channel Cutters are well documented over the years by their owners who have sailed them offshore extensively. The Dawson’s are starting ownership with a three week shakedown cruise,. The have plans to voyage further afield now that their children are grown. I wish the Dawson’s Fair Winds and look forward to working with the Planks towards the purchase of their next Cutter!

“All boats rise with the tide”

and Crusader’s tide is rising!

We have worked hard to grow and evolve the business during this difficult time and it is paying dividends!

Compared to 2008:

1. We had a 30% increase in sales

2. Our website visits increased by 274%!

Here are some frequently asked questions:

Q: How do you know how much your website increased?

A: Google Analytics is a very powerful tool.

1. We can generate many different reports: by day, month, content viewed, geographic area, etc.

2. We know, for example that in December 2009, we had visitors from 73 countries. Our international visitors have risen dramatically.

3. We can tell average number of pages viewed, average time spent on the site, what pages were viewed. It is fun and exciting to see, and it is tempting to over-analyze numbers, but we are monitoring trends to make sure that we are on the right track. Very powerful stuff.

Q: That is remarkable, especially considering that much of the marine industry experienced decreases around 40%. How did you do it?

A: Obviously, it is the result of a lot of factors:

1. Our staff are great professionals - they are experienced, successful brokers. We are all credentialed “CPYB” brokers. Our brokers represent a diverse cross section of both sail and power, not limiting CYS to a niche.

2. We changed our emphasis from print ads to a more Internet-based marketing approach. This successful campaign was designed to:

i. Increase search engine optimization.

ii. Target specific buyers

iii. Increase the visibility of individual listings

Q: As a seller, I don’t understand how increased general website activity helps sell my boat. Wouldn’t an ad in one of the magazines with my boat listed be better?

A: Increased activity equals an increase in personal contacts. Ask any real estate agent, and they will tell you ads for particular houses and open houses are mainly done to make the seller happy, and to entice other sellers to list with them. Rarely do sales come from direct inquiries on a particular boat.

1. Our job as a professional broker to is match buyers with sellers.

2. Once we establish that someone is considering buying a boat, we go through a process to help the buyers find the right boat. Often, it is not the boat that started our conversation.

3. So, you can see that it is truly a “numbers game.” The more potential buyers we talk to, the more boats we sell. Since “All boats rise on the tide,” all boats listed by Crusader will benefit.

4. It is much easier to point to an ad in one of the magazines than to explain some of the rather high-tech methods we are using now to promote our company and our listings, but we think that sellers are savvy enough to realize that times have changed.

5. Of course, we do still advertise in magazines, just not as much as we did before. We have actually increased our marketing budget.

Q: But what will you do for my boat?

A: We will work together to create a Marketing Plan. See our website section “Selling” for more details.

Q: I saw your display in Tent C at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. Was that your first time with a tent display?

A: Yes. In addition to the wonderful Pacific Seacraft display on Dock C, we also had a completely new display on land, featuring our beautiful brokerage boats, and new Pacific Seacrafts and Bruckmanns.

1. We started with a blank slate, and designed a booth that showcased our unique blend of hi-tech marketing and friendly brokers. We had a great slide show of our brokerage boats on a 48″ TV, as well as two computers with monitors and Internet connections to enable brokers to have detailed, productive conversations with buyers and sellers.

2. The fresh, modern look of the display received lots of compliments. This exposure definitely helped us finish 2009 with a flourish - December was one of our best months ever!

It is with great sadness that I report Bill’s death. Not only was he a good man, he left behind a strong legacy of wonderful boat designs, including, of course, the Pacific Seacraft 31, 34, 37, 40, 40PH, and 44. It made him very happy knowing that so many people were enjoying their Pacific Seacrafts.

For years, Bill and Lynne attended our Open Houses at Crusader Yacht Sales. Those of us who were fortunate to meet them; listen to the stories of his adventures, and hear him expalin his design philosophy, and to see Lynne’s beautiful paintings, will never forget it.

I remember him often as I see the many beautiful Pacific Seacrafts at our office and hear from Pacific Seacraft owners how much they love their boats.

He will be sorely missed.

Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s Brigantine Project Completion Loan, www.lamitopsail.org.

Well it’s “My Turn”. I’m finally on the ICW headed to FL. Wanted each of you to know that the 1990 Pacific Seacraft 37 I purchased in 2003 is now taking me into the next chapter of my life.

Thanks to Mr. Crealock for the design, Pacific Seacraft Corp. for building a quality sailboat, and to Crusader Yachts for helping me find LOON AND close the deal.

Currently docked at Lady’s Island Marina in Beaufort, NC. Also, I have a blog at http://svloon.blogspot.com. Please take a look, I hope you enjoy.

Thanks again to everyone, for making my sailing plans in retirement a reality. Ben

At a recent sales meeting, the staff let Nancy know “in a very constructive way”that it was past time to post our new line Bruckmann yachts on the website. She gave all of the usual excuses - busy with boat shows, etc. It seemed to Nancy that the brokers had put her head on a silver platter.

The next day, Nancy wrote to her brokers that she had made the additions to the website, and said “I hope I get my head back from the silver platter now.”

At the next sales meeting, Scott Taylor and Bill Day surprised all of us by ceremoniously presenting Nancy her head back on a beautiful silver platter.

Downeast Boatbuilding Legend

Jarvis Newman, of Southwest Harbor, Maine, is probably the most famous “Downeast” boat builder in the country. His name is virtual royalty when it comes to Downeast boats and you are lucky if your boat is associated with him. When it comes to New England built Lobster Boats, the real beauty is in the quality and design of the hull and the sexiness of the sheer line and Jarvis Newman is the master of that world. Mr. Newman has been building boats most of his life, along with many other marine related adventures. His relationships with the best designers and other “finishing yards” are wide and deep.

Mr. Newman has collaborated with the best of the best builders on the Maine Coast such as Ralph Stanley, Raymond Bunker and Ralph Ellis.

Pictured is Bay Shore mechanic Shawn putting a tweak on the wheel which was recently coated with Prop Speed as was the rudder. This is a relatively new product that serves to keep these metals free of antifouling and what a difference that makes in performance!

Ken and Heidi are going into their third season with the Legacy and report that the transition from sail to power has been a smooth one. They look forward to having a little more speed in reserve for outrunning thunderstorms, catching a scheduled bridge, or just getting in on time Sunday afternoon.

Crusader Yacht Sales wishes them a great season of boating in 2009!

Just as the fisherman are the first out on the water in the morning they are also the first boat buyers in a given year…..On December 27th I was out with Kyle Johnson of Solomon’s with his 21 line spread, trolling for Rockfish. Kyle is a rising star in the charter trades and has a remarkable ability to find the Rock which is the premier fish that the Chesapeake has to offer.

This was my fourth trip with Kyle and due to his congenial nature it’s as though you are fishing with a longtime friend. His boat was a 25′ center console powered by a single Yamaha outboard. No canvass to get in the way of light tackle. An ideal platform in September, passable into November but by December when the fishing is really heating up it was a bit shy on protecting the crew from the weather. A friend of mine described our December outings as “full combat” fishing.

On our outing on the 27th, Kyle made mention of the fact that he was considering moving into a new boat that would offer his parties some shelter. Between Christmas and New Years we met in Shady Side, Md. and inspected a 29′ C-Hawk that immediately seemed to fit the bill. This boat has an inside steering station (small pilothouse), and a large cockpit half of which is protected by a hardtop with side curtains. Now we are talking about some crew comfort! The C-Hawk also is rigged with a hydraulic steering station in the cockpit such that the Captain can be part of the action.

Within a couple of weeks of the “boat discovery”, Kyle had an accepted offer subject to surveys and sea trials. Surveyor Tarn Kelsey proved to be very knowledgeable in regard to this craft having had prior experience with the boat. Under Tarn’s guidance we were able to achieve an extra knot and a half at wide open throttle. Not a “big deal” but nice to have the extra speed in the bank! Settlement was on a cold February day (Kyle’s birthday) at the offices of Crusader Yacht Sales. This was an early boat sale on the 2009 calendar and as a result Kyle will be ready to go on opening day in April.

Kyle Johnson is a second generation waterman who is giving it his all to remain connected to the Chesapeake Bay. Please contact Crusader Yacht Sales broker Scott Taylor for an introduction to Kyle.

Working with Gary Jobson, who is truly an icon of our sport (Navigator aboard America’s Cup winning Defender “Courageous”), might have been intimidating, but I quickly discovered that the opposite was the case. Gary has a disarming and personable manner that has served him well over the years. He extended every possible courtesy to the new owner. Working with America’s “face of sailing” turned out to be a very rewarding experience.

Once Terry Brady (buyer) made a close personal inspection of the boat, he was comfortable in moving forward with surveys and sea trials. I coordinated this with Hartoft Marine Survey and scheduled a quick-haul at Bert Jabins Marina.

“Whirlwind” was exceptionally well prepared for survey and sea trials, right down to the safety equipment being up to date and all in place. A well prepared boat can be surveyed more thoroughly and in fewer hours than the average boat.
The seller’s mechanics commissioned all of the boats systems in advance, and riggers had the sails bent on a day in advance. What a difference this makes on survey day! The post survey punch list required the hot water heater be re-set, a couple of cockpit scupper hoses be replaced (they might have lasted another five years but better safe than sorry), and replacement of a couple of defunct GFI receptacles.

As the buyer was unable to attend the sea trial, Gary went through the boat from stem to stern with a Dictaphone to be transcribed into an up to date operations manual for the boat. This is intended to save the new owner hours of re-inventing the wheel!

Finding the right buyer for “Whirlwind” took several months longer than we anticipated, perhaps due to prevailing market conditions. My first visit to the boat was with the mast down and the boat in a dark shed, far Downeast on the Maine Coast. Perhaps one of the ultimate cruising destinations in the world but not an accelerator in getting prospective buyers aboard! With “Whirlwind” relocated to Annapolis this past September, it was in a choice position to be shown during the Annapolis Sailboat Show and subsequently over the winter. “Whirlwind” will be missed here on the Chesapeake but is clearly in good hands!

“The tradition dates back to the mid-1980s when Bob Turner, then manager of the Annapolis Yacht Yard, got tired of the winter blahs. He’d spent the whole season working on OPBs (other peoples’ boats), all the while collecting metal filings, bottom paint grindings, sawdust, fiberglas fibers, and globs of paint, caulk, resin and filler in his socks. On the first day of spring one year, he took off his socks, put them in a paint tray, doused them with lighter fluid, and toasted spring with a longneck beer while they burned.

Traditionally, die-hard boaters wear deck shoes sans socks from the Vernal Equinox until winter arrives.*

There are now sock burnings in other boating towns from Key West to Seattle.

The tradition has been commemorated in verse, which is recited every year”

Annapolis Alive

Ode to the Sock Burners

By Jefferson Holland, Poet Laureate of Eastport, 1995

Them Eastport boys got an odd tradition
When the sun swings to its Equinoxical position,
They build a little fi re down along the docks,
They doff their shoes and they burn their winter socks.

Yes, they burn their socks at the Equinox;
You might think that’s peculiar, but I think it’s not,
See, they’re the same socks they put on last fall,
And they never took ‘em off to wash ‘em, not at all.

So they burn their socks at the Equinox
In a little ol’ fi re burning nice and hot.
Some think incineration is the only solution,
‘Cause washin’ ‘em contributes to the Chesapeake’s pollution.

Through the spring and the summer and into the fall,
They go around not wearin’ any socks at all,
Just stinky bare feet stuck in old deck shoes,
Whether out on the water or sippin’ on a brew.

So if you sail into the Harbor on the 21st of March,
And you smell a smell like Limburger sauteed with laundry starch,
You’ll know you’re downwind of the Eastport docks
Where they’re burning their socks for the Equinox.

*One exception to this rule: If on a given day the temperature drops below 30° Fahrenheit and the wind gusts over 17 knots, one can wimp out and don socks. This is known as the “Wimp-Chill Factor.”

Jeff Holland is the Museum Director of Annapolis Maritime Museum. This organization is doing a great job of keeping our history alive. Take a tour of Thomas Point Lighthouse this summer!

We have become accustomed to selling boats year round here on the Chesapeake Bay courtesy of climate change. It is unusual now for boats to become locked in the ice or for lift wells to be to firm to launch a boat for sea trial.

This winter however we had a few weeks reminder of what it can be like on the Chesapeake in cold weather! I have been working with Neil Jordaan towards the purchase of a lovely 44’ Mason sloop built in Asia by “Ta Shing” or Pacific Asian Enterprises. For those not familiar with these boats, they represent (in my opinion) the top of the food chain for boats manufactured in the Far East. Every aspect of the boat from the GRP tooling to the interior fit and finish is just exemplary. The metal components, wiring, and rigging also are to high yacht standards.

On first inspection of the Mason there was two inches of solid ice locking the boat in her slip. For the preliminary survey I used my weight in a RIB to break enough of the ice around the boat to allow for Marine Surveyor Bob Skord to get a thorough look at the hull sides. The following week gave us a warmer weather window in which to move the boat across the Inner Harbor to Boston Street for a “quick haul” and return trip sea trial.

After a full evaluation of the boat and the review of a perfunctory punch list with Captain Simon Lont, Neil Jordaan is starting to realize that he is purchasing a very special yacht! The Mason’s are a traditional hull form with overhangs that are no longer popular in yacht design. She is full-keeled with a cutaway fore-foot so no speed demon. I would venture though that Neil will sail this boat many miles before he ever gets a sense that the boat is pounding into a head-sea.

Good Luck Neil with this wonderful yacht!

Long Lines to see the first Pacific Seacrafts built in North Carolina

People waited patiently all during the show for their chance to see the brand new Pacific Seacraft 31, 37 and 40. Many had been following the story of the journey Pacific Seacraft has made in the last year: how Steve Brodie bought the company and moved it lock, stock and barrel (including 20 valuable workers) to Washington, NC. They wanted to see for themselves what the new boats looked like.

Perfect Weather

Five days of perfect weather added to everyone’s enjoyment.

Great Response

“The fit and finish is even better than our boat and we love our boat.” (Pacific Seacraft owner)

“It is so good to see a sailor’s boat here.”

“We’re so glad that Pacific Seacraft is doing well. It is a feel-good story.”

After purchasing a sail boat 2 years ago, I’ve been on a mission to improve my off-shore sailing capabilities. Doing so in tandem with one’s spouse is like taking a test with a crib sheet. You know someone will always listen to your woes and/or come to your rescue.

So, I set out to be a crew member on the svSpirit on her return trip from Bermuda to Long Island, NY following the Newport-Bermuda race. The captain, Kris, knew I had limited experience and wasn’t expecting much. My challenge was to set aside any feelings of insecurity and show these men my determination to make a positive contribution to the voyage. Later, I would learn how life aboard Spirit would test my limits while boosting my confidence exponentially. If there is a zeitgeist of sailing it lives aboard the svSpirit.

I arrived in Bermuda on Friday with an expected departure date of Sunday. This gave me a chance to get to know the crew, the vessel, swim, dance and party. These traditional bonding experiences paled in comparison to the unity forged on the open sea.

First day out the captain caught a fish – a mahi mahi. I was asked to cook this priceless meal. I’d never eaten a fish much less cooked one. In the back of my mind were all the “stupid Sue” tapes I’d accumulated over the years waiting to derail me. Quicker than you can say zip drive every program I ever viewed involving a frying pan flashed before my mind. What would Rachel Ray do? I had written one simple “lesson plan” for myself: no excuses, no complaints, stay positive. With just an alcohol stove and minimal spices I simmered the fish in the pan along with melted butter with lemon zest, onion, salt and pepper. It was pronounced “very good.” And know what? – I’m pretty good too! Before I could say “yeah me”, I felt my temperature rising and my knees getting shaky. Quickly, I embraced the life line while tossing my fish back into the sea. The creatures of the deep did not look kindly upon this fact. One thing’s for sure, the sea doesn’t give you much time to wax poetic before bringing you back down to reality. There is absolutely no graceful way to lose your lunch. Sadly, no more fish were caught on this voyage. Even the occasional flying fish who visited the boat avoided me. They only appeared when I was not on watch.

Just before sunset that first day, the winds began to build and we reefed the sail. When the captain said, point her into the wind – the boat responded effortlessly to my touch and the skipper realized perhaps he had a crew member with more skills than anticipated. The stars seemed to say “welcome back” on night watch. This was to be only my second sail upon the ocean. This voyage would also teach me new respect for the ocean’s power.

The rest of the voyage would be marked by storms – at least five in total. The second storm was the worst. The engine was not running due to a battery issue (which due to the ingenuity of the skipper proved to be a temporary problem). When summoned at 2:00 a.m. for duty I thought I was just coming on night watch when I popped my head outside. The skipper barked out an order to put on my safety gear. On deck the wind was blowing hard – at least 35 – 40 mph. My job was to hold the boat into the wind while Kris and Eric reefed the main. It took every last bit of energy I had in me but, come hell or high water (and I think I was experiencing both) failure was not an option. It seemed like it took a long time but I’m sure it was mere minutes before we were underway again. My adrenaline was pumping at this point and I was anxious to stay on deck and assist. My pride was hurt when asked to go below. Then, the reality of the situation hit me. A third man on deck was not needed. And, the skipper and first mate, Eric, would tire and need relief. They went into protection mode and stayed on deck to 6:00 am. When they finally allowed me to relieve them I returned the favor – I let them sleep until past noon.

When Kris and Eric woke up rested it hit them who had been steering for several hours. The rain had stopped but the winds had not diminished. Yet, wonder of wonders, we were on course. This simple fact brought new respect for me. The skipper was wise and experienced but he still needed a crew. Adversity had expanded everyone’s trust in each other. Then, we realized how hungry everyone was. Eric made cup of noodles - they never tasted better!
It had been a difficult start to the day. My arms were tired but my spirit felt invincible. I had experienced my first ocean storm, met my fears, and conquered them.

Throughout the remaining days the crew gathered in the cockpit during the mid-day hours. I don’t know why but I find watching the waves mesmerizing. The vast horizon seems to open the mind. Kris and Eric came to America from Poland. Kris’s work with Solidarity caused his exile from Poland. He was keenly aware of America as the seat of democracy. When they learned I taught History and Government the discussions turned to comparative politics. I had visited Poland in 1974. But, truth-be-told we were all there to have fun and sail. What I enjoyed most were his stories of his adventures building boats and racing sailing dinghies back in the day in Poland.

Other discussions were of a more personal nature. The open horizon seems to allow people to bare their soul. Trust took on a more personal meaning as crew members shared their stories. Life is not always kind. But, alone on a 38 foot sailboat sharing distant problems allowed our little crew to identify themselves, drop our worries and just be. Here we were three people in a boat as unique and different as could be. One single, one twice divorced, and one married 32 years. I think that just about covers the full range of traditional relationships.

Later in the voyage, an unknown short in the electrical system had drained our battery. We were without an engine or power in the Gulf Stream. The problem was correctable but for the moment, with light winds, we were doing negative V.M.G. at one point. Unseen problems can either draw the crew together or splinter the group into opinionated nay-sayers. svSpirit worked her charms. Our crew focused on solving the problem. The skipper, Kris, used a flexcell solar panel attached directly to the starting battery to restore the necessary voltage to start the engine. The solution took about 3 ½ days with storms. Which meant we had plenty of time to appreciate the warm waves of the Gulf Stream splashing over the boat. Then, just after a brief storm we were becalmed. During a hot, slow moment about 100 dolphins appeared out of nowhere. They hung around for quite a while - a squad of Neptune’s cheerleaders come to encourage us along the way. Awesome!

On the 5th day we were motoring through calm seas and fishing – no fish (they don’t forget do they?) Everyone was happy to be close to our destination and enjoying calm waters. Then Kris spotted a family of whales. I didn’t see the baby jump but I did see the fluke of the parent whale just off the bow. They are such massive, graceful creatures which you just don’t get to see on the Chesapeake Bay. Ocean sailing has its rewards!

Approaching NY while engulfed in yet another storm, Eric, saw a white flare while at the helm. Skipper, Kris, called the Coast Guard. This sighting was confirmed over the radio by svSwift. Later, Eric saw the lights of a helicopter sent to investigate the scene. It was a solemn moment. Despite mishaps, we survived the storms and were less than 100 miles from port. Someone else was not as lucky.

The last leg of the trip past Fire Island light into Long Island sound was slow. The winds had died. The diesel supply had been expended so it was to be a slow sail into port. But, it was a wondrous conclusion to our adventure together. I had never seen Long Island from the water and was thoroughly transfixed by the slowing emerging panorama of sights on shore. We anchored briefly to allow the winds to build and enjoyed our last meal aboard svSprit – our restaurant by the sea.

After a full day of sailing we approached the fuel dock we had been directed to by Kris’s friend, Bill. Cell phones - got to love them! The fuel dock, the Bayshore Marina, was inside a cut shared by high speed ferries. We were doing about 1 knot. I saw a puff ahead about 500 feet and asked the captain permission to put the boat on wing and wing. It was time for this Chesapeake Bay sailor to show this captain what many summer hours in light winds had taught me. With the puff we got up to 2.4 knots - enough to slip through the cut before the next ferry made its’ appearance. The skipper took the helm and we docked for fuel – my first land in almost 7 days. The wonders of a flush toilet are not to be underestimated!

Back at port, the crew was invited to a beach party on Jones Beach with a local band. After 7 days at sea dancing was the way to celebrate! Later the crew was invited to an after party for the band at a magnificent home on Long Island. The music was grand and the company spontaneous and talented. Our hosts were a beautiful couple who seemed to have stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine. They could not have been more gracious.

While at the beach I could see the harbor light we’d passed many hours before aboard svSpirit. At the party, there were boats docked in the canal adjacent to the home of our hosts. Despite a hot shower, cooked food, clean clothes and elegant surroundings, a little piece of me wasn’t ready to leave the adventure of sailing behind.

Would I crew alone again? Yes! It made me rely and build on my own skills. It allowed me to gain the trust of new, more experienced sailors and learn from them. What‘s really cool is how total strangers who love sailing can bond quickly and get the job done while having fun. Eric told me later that the skipper, Kris, wasn’t expecting much and was surprised. I did not know what to expect and was amazed.

What new adventure awaits me? Where will it be?

In May of 2006 Sue and Glenn Strickland purchased a Cal 39 from Crusader Yachts just after receiving ASA certification in Bare Boat Chartering in the Virgin Islands. Kelly Bickford, our broker at Crusader Yachts, discussed the intricacies of boat design with us before showing us many boats from the sublime to those in need of too much TLC. After looking at Tartans, Hunters, and other production boats, there she was: a 1983 Cal 39 who seemed to beckon to us: “Trust me and I will make your dreams come true.” Here was a sturdy vessel that was affordable. Thus began a love affair with the boat, now named TwoBySea, and sailing.
In 2007 Sue and Glenn entered their boat in the Cruising Rally Association’s Bermuda Cup. This was the first step in pursuing their goal of ocean sailing. Most, but not all, pre-trip expenditures went towards a self steering wind vane, engine maintenance and a head upgrade to include a “y” valve and a large capacity aluminum holding tank. However, the boat itself proved true to its design as an ocean racer and required only a crew with the will to sail her. Our Cal 39, TwoBySea, was designed by Bill Lapworth and solidly constructed of thick fiber glass with an all wood interior. She draws 6’8” and has a keel stepped mast. The known quality of the boat helped in recruiting a crew.

This voyage was made possible through the assistance of a volunteer crew recruited largely through the Cruising Rally Association. Steve Black, organizer of the event, directed Sue and Glenn toward experienced sailors who graciously volunteered their time and talents to help them sail to Bermuda. Despite pre-trip checklists and the purchase of spare parts, the passage was not without challenges. Despite the unanticipated repairs and resulting frayed nerves, it was the trip of a lifetime.
The voyage taught Sue and Glenn more about all aspects of sail trim, boat maintenance, navigation, crew management, right down to tying knots than could have been learned in five years of Bay sailing. It also demonstrated for us the wonder of passage making. One night Glenn went forward and listened to the blow holes of a pod of dolphins cavorting in the bow waves and setting off the phosphorescence in the ocean. The sunsets were incredible. The stars at night seemed like the face of God encircling the earth with love and majesty. The clean smell and rich blue of the ocean fills each moment of the day with potential. Each day at sea introduced us to something new: flying fish, steering in a following sea, spotting whales, and dodging flying squid (*very small creatures). We even maneuvered at close range at night in order to assist a fellow Rally member with a gift of needed fuel.
We would not recommend this trip be undertaken by new sailors without a seasoned crew. On more than one occasion the experience of valued crew members saved the day. Also, outside of close friends, selecting crew through a private organization, such as the Cruising Rally Association, as opposed to a public access crew list is the best way to assure compatible, able sailors who own boats of comparable size will join you.
We have chosen to make sailing part of the tie that binds as our children begin their adult lives. This trip put us on track to realize our goal to be two upon an ocean. TwoBySea proved herself to be our faithful ally in that endeavor. We still have much to learn, but much more to look forward to.

Dave & Rhonda Mancini are in the South Pacific on their Pacific Seacraft 34. Their website www.swancruise.com has lots of useful information, including an article about why they chose a Pacific Seacraft. My wife and I decided to buy a cruising yacht and go offshore cruising. I had done it once before and dreamed of doing it again. I guess I talked about it enough that she caught the fever, too, so we began to look for the perfect blue water cruising boat. After a lot of research into cruising sailboat designs, we decided on the Pacific Seacraft 34, a proven offshore cruising yacht designed by Bill Crealock. With many global voyages to its credit, the Pacific Seacraft 34 seemed the best blue water sailboat for us. All boats are a compromise, but Pacific Seacraft compromised the least in the areas we believed were necessary for accomplishing our particular plans. So, we sold our house and pretty much everything else of value and began looking for one.

Since then, he has had many wonderful adventures on Maiden Song. Here is an excerpt from his blog:
Maiden Song arrived in Barbados (West Indies) after a delightful 19-day crossing from Cape Verde. Two months in the Azores were fantastic. Friendly Portuguese people who want to talk with you even though they don’t understand what you’re saying. Beautiful rolling hills with pastures separated by wild blue hibiscus. Waterfalls a hundred meters high. Small villages that have somehow escaped the passing of time. Lush vegetation with lots of clean fresh water everywhere. Hiking along ancient roadways that are merely foot paths with stone walls on both sides. People restoring abandoned windmills and living in them.
Two months in Cape Verde were equally wonderful, but in a different way. Such contrasts! Beautiful white sand deserts scattered with oases on the island of Boavista and Alp-like mountains reaching to the sky on Santo Antao. The people are a mix of African and Portuguese - very beautiful. And friendly. If you ask for directions how to get somewhere, they will invariably find someone to accompany you, even if it takes hours. This once happened twice in the same day while on an overnight hike. Startling mountain scenery with villages perched half-way up the mountain, accessible only by foot or donkey.

Testimonials

“Through good times and bad, for almost 30 years Nancy Cann and Crusader Yacht Sales have been a fixture in Annapolis and the marine industry. In a business where brokers tend to come and go, this longevity is testimony to the high level of service provided by Nancy and her crew. Terrie and I certainly appreciated the help and attention we got when we were selling our Pacific Seacraft, ‘Nada’. As we enter another tough period for the industry, a proven record such as Nancy’s is ever more important to both boat buyers and sellers.” - Nigel Calder

“The Seven Seas Cruising Association has been enjoying the generous support of CYS for some years now, and we genuinely appreciate all your efforts. You have been one of the major sponsors of our SSCA Annapolis Gam, a social gathering of hundreds of cruisers each fall, contributing auction items and door prizes and staffing a vendor table as well as purchasing advertising in our Gam programs. CYS President Nancy Cann has also helped us promote our seamanship workshop series with Nigel Calder and meteorologist Lee Chesneau. And SSCA Members who buy a boat through CYS receive a $200 gift certificate. It is support from marine businesses like yours that our Members genuinely value.” - Nancy Zapf, Vice President SSCA Board of Directors

“The Department of Natural Resources wishes to express appreciation for your excellent business ethics and the goodwill you have extended not only to your customers but also to the employees of the Department.” - David VanDyke, Administrative Services

“Nancy Cann has been a supporter of the Marine Trades Association of Maryland since she opened her business. For a trade association like MTAM, she is the best kind of member. Through her membership, she seeks ways of giving back to the industry where she is making a living. She has served on the Maryland Boat Dealer Advisory Committee to the Department of Natural Resources, has sponsored the Annapolis Safety at Sea Seminar annually and has been an excellent spokesperson for MTAM at bill hearings where a boat broker’s expertise is needed. Associations like MTAM are so grateful for this kind of support that is present in difficult as well as prosperous times.” - Susan Zellers, Executive Director, Marine Trades Association of Maryland

He built an excellent reputation as one of the primary sailboat brokers on the Chesapeake Bay, and is widely known in the brokerage community. His niche is in selling cruising sailboats, and has extensive knowledge about Downeast-style powerboats. Bill prides himself on his reputation amongst his clients as being honest, hard working, and as a broker selling with integrity. When you work with Bill, you will see that one of his many strengths is in developing and maintaining long-term relationships with his clients. Bill is a Philadelphia-area native, and grew up sailing and power boating on the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore. He loves to cruise the Bay and offshore, when the opportunity arises. When asked where some of his favorite cruising grounds are he emphatically describes his recent trip to Newport and Cuttyhunk, but says you have not lived until you’ve sailed into a quiet cove on the Chesapeake, in October. Bill’s previous career was as a District Judge in Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Johnson and Wales University, in Providence, RI and attended Widener University School of Law. While living in the Philadelphia area, he was an active member of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia. Bill is a Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB), being one of less than 500 CPYB’s in the yacht sales industry. He is also a member of the Yacht Broker’s Association of America (YBAA), and subscribes to the organizations strict ethical rules.

He has developed a devoted client base and has helped numerous sailors’ change boats as their needs evolve. He is active in representing both sailing yachts and power cruisers. Recent sails include an array of yachts as diverse as Bristol, Duffy, Lyman-Morse, Grand Banks, Kanter, Fleming, Freedom, Sabre, and Abeking & Rasmussen. Scott joined Crusader Yacht Sales in 2008 to enjoy the benefits of newly available technology and the camaraderie of a seasoned yacht sales team.

Scott caught the boating bug early in life when his father introduced him to sailing a Hampton One Design on the upper reaches of the Chesapeake Bay while being raised in New Castle County Delaware. Scott attended Wilmington Friends School and Alexis I. DuPont High School. Since the 1970’s, Scott’s life and vocation has always been boat-centered. Today on a day off you will likely find Scott sailing with his family, putting in a day of Race Committee duty, combing boatyards for interesting listings, or spin casting for Rockfish from his kayak. Scott enjoys memberships with the Indian Landing Boat Club, Severn Sailing Association, and the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake.

In the 70’s and 80’s Scott apprenticed as a sail maker in Annapolis. He eventually worked as head sail designer for North Sails Chesapeake. This vocation led to sailing on a wide variety of sailing yachts and to sailing competitions nationally and internationally. In this time frame he met his wife Susan Dierdorff Taylor, former Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year and 470 Woman’s World Champion. Scott and Susan take tremendous pride in his two children Chandlee (currently attending Bryn Mawr College) and Peter.

Memorable sailing events include the Newport-Bermuda Race, legs of the SORC, numerous Snipe Nationals and the World Championship, and regattas in Norway, Spain, and Germany. Scott has cruised from Maine to the Eastern Caribbean.

If you are looking for a competent broker to represent you please give Scott a call and allow him to put his experience to work for you!

Testimonials

“This is to express a wonderful experience that my wife, Kathy, and I had in finding and purchasing our latest boat, a Fleming 55 Pilot House Trawler.
As we live in San Diego and our interest was to purchase a boat on the east coast in order to enjoy the great cruising there, we were referred to Scott Taylor in Annapolis.

We made a number of trips to Annapolis as we have family in the area so Scott was very helpful in providing access to boats that we were possibly interested in purchasing. Over the course of a year or more, Scott was diligent in getting us into various vessels in the Chesapeake region.

Finally in June of 2006, Scott found a Fleming 55 that was located in Galesville and we fell in love with it. Scott was diligent in the negotiations and he provided great follow up for us.

We finalized the purchase and Scott lined up the right people to do the sea trials, settlement, haul out and other details as we had limited time in the area. Kathy and I have enjoyed our boat on the east coast and this year I took the boat back to San Diego through the Panama Canal over a three month, 6,000 mile cruise. The boat has held up magnificently and now we are enjoying it in San Diego with trips to Catalina and Mexico. We plan to head to the northwest and Alaska in a few years.

We have recommended Scott to some friends as we found our experience exceptional and we would certainly use Scott in the future if we had the occasion to look for another boat.” - H. P. “Sandy” Purdon

“I have known Scott Taylor for many years and have found him to be hardworking, knowledgeable and completely trustworthy. I have had 5 transactions with Scott both buying and selling. Scott has always sold my boats at an excellent price and been with me every step of the way during the acquisition of a new vessel. I would give Scott Taylor my highest recommendation.” - Thad L. Bench, CEO Benchworks

“I recently purchased a 1993 Pacific Seacraft 34 through your brokerage, with the helpful assistance of Dave van den Arend. I wanted to let you know what a pleasure it was to work with Dave, and how much his candor, integrity and knowledge helped me. I have been planning this purchase for over thirty years of saving, dreaming and studying. I had narrowed my search down to Pacific Seacraft – but knew nothing about buying a boat.

From the moment we met, Dave impressed me as an unusual man. He took time – first – to ask about and really listen to what I wanted and needed in a boat. He offered extremely valuable advice – but never tried to steer me to what he preferred over what I prefer. Dave went the extra mile from day one – obviously working very hard on my behalf. He could not have taken better care of me, even though my work schedule makes it hard to contact me at most times. Dave became a trusted source of information and counsel, and a new friend. I can’t imagine having a better experience with a broker, anywhere at any time.

You can rest assured that Crusader will remain my preferred broker, and you will enjoy my strongest recommendation with my friends who are interested in buying boats.

“Dave van den Arend did an excellent job finding a boat for my wife and me. He listened carefully as each of us described what we wanted in a boat, and amalgamating those two disjoint sets of criteria, he steered us away from boats with which only one or the other of us would have been happy. When we settled on an Orion 27 with the dinette arrangement as an ideal type he located boats and arranged visits. His handling of the final sale was professional and transparent. He handled all the details, including arranging for a surveyor in a city distant from us and took all the anxiety out of the process. I heartily recommend Dave to anyone looking for help in finding that perfect Pacific Seacraft or similar boat.” - Patrick Gould

“When I decided to sell my Whitby 42, the best decision I made was to deal with Crusader Yachts. I got excellent advice from Rod Rowan and once the boat was listed I had a buyer within a month. Dave van den Arend, the buyer’s representative was equally professional and the entire experience far exceeded my expectation. It was actually fun! The new owner and I are becoming friends-a tribute to the professionals at Crusader Yachts.” - Tom Schwark

“It’s often said that some of the happiest days of a sailors life occur when he or she sells or buys their boat. The excitiment and/or frustration of buying or selling can sometimes be overwhelming. In my case Dave handled both, for my wife and I, at the same time. We were anxious to sell our smaller boat and move onto a larger one and still get fair prices in each transaction. Dave’s advice and expertise was almost invaluable and helped with making the process as hassle free as possible. It added to the relief of selling our old boat and the enjoyment of finding and buying our new one.” - Bob & Beverly Skalkowski

“We purchased our beautiful cruising sailboat with the help of Dave van den Arend at Crusader Yachts. His professionalism, knowledge of the boating industry, friendlessness and willingness to accommodate us was exceptional. We were from Pittsburgh and our time in the Annapolis area was always limited. Dave was great with taking care of things for us during the sale when it was tough for us to be there. Our boat was to be our liveaboard sailboat for sailing to the Bahamas, Caribbean etc. We had and idea of what we were looking for, however, before we met Dave, we were not having much luck finding anything within our price range. With his help we found a boat we never thought to look at & the perfect one for us. We really appreciated all that he did to help us find our “dream” boat at the right price.” - Dave Krewin & Margi Floss / s/v Wayward Sun

“The perfect sailboat, broker, and brokerage, are words that best describe my recent purchase of a Pacific Seacraft from broker, Dave van den Arend at Crusader Yacht Sales. Dave was a pleasure to work with during my purchase. I must commend his courteous, professional and friendly manner, immediate response to my many questions and attention to all of my concerns. The Survey was scheduled at my convenience with the Seller present to answer questions and relate to me his personal knowledge and years of experience with this sailboat. After the sale, since I was not familiar with Annapolis, Dave helped me to find a pet friendly marina, and provided me a list of individual candidates to perform various work related items needed on my sailboat.” - District Judge Joan Snyder

Sailing for over 40 years, he has cruised and raced extensively on the Chesapeake and offshore. His diligence as well as his business and boating experience inspire the trust of his many loyal clients who often refer their friends and family members to him. Many “industry insiders” have chosen Rod as their Yacht Broker over the years.

Active for many years with YBAA, the Yacht Brokers Association of America www.ybaa.org, Rod was appointed to its Board of Directors in 2003, has served as Chair of its Professional Education Committee since 2005 and was elected Treasurer early in 2008. As testimony to his ongoing interest in professionalism in the industry, he was recognized last summer by YBAA for his work in producing “The Guide,” www.ybaa.org the Yacht Brokerage Industry’s first ever training manual for professional practices. He has also been instrumental over the years in other YBAA projects including many revisions of YBAA’s standard purchase and listing forms, in use throughout the Yacht Brokerage industry. With this background, Rod often finds himself advising less experienced brokers when they have problems.

Rod has two college age “children,” who both (occasionally) work at Crusader and enjoy sailing (and some mountaineering!) with their dad. He holds a BA from Johns Hopkins and an MBA with honors from George Mason University.

Testimonials

“Once again Crusader has come through for us. The sale of our first boat was handled in a timely and professional manner. How could you possibly top that experience. Rod Rowan was the answer. When it became time for us to sell our second boat, a PCS 40, Rod Rowan guided us through the maze of issues quickly and most professionally. With his expertise, we were able to list, market, sell and close, in less than two months. We actually had a buyer within three weeks of listing.

Rod’s inter-personal skills were at work bringing seller and buyer together in what may well prove to be a lasting relationship. They actually offered us the limited use of “our” (their) new boat while they summer in Maine. Rod was also quick to grasp our possible need for a “future” boat. He began immediately to inquire about our desires and tastes. He is truly a great asset for Crusader.

Nancy, you have a great product in Pacific Seacraft and a great organization to back you up.” - George & Judy Weckel “SEA BONDS”

“Rod recently helped me purchase an out-of-state boat. Rod’s contacts throughout the industry and his absolute prfessionalism made my purchase a pleasure.Often buyers contact the out of state broker and work through them directly. Having Rod represent my interests was invaluable.” - David Marchand

“World-class Pacific Seacraft sailboats’ are difficult to resist. They are beautiful and great performers. Making this unique purchase can be exciting, however keeping on track is most important. Rod kept me appraised during the whole process; his patience, practical advice and willingness to explain best options or scenarios were mostly appreciated. What’s more, his aftercare client support is outstanding; from insurance to registration to bilge pumps to windlass, he always knows in which directions to point to get the best. It has been and still is a wonderful journey.” - Suzanne Pelland (seller and buyer)

“We arrived at our home port around noon on Sunday. We sailed for about 4 hrs in 10 – 15 knots and motored the last 3, typical for Lake Ontario. The boat performed well.

True to the saying docking is an adventure the gear shift refused to go into neutral at the dock and we played tug of war with the Yanmar but managed to wrestle the lines onto cleats no damage done. Never blame the skipper.

The boat arrived in great shape in Wilson. Andrews did a great job trucking it and the riggers did a good job packing the rig.

Thanks for the gift and your help over the last 4 weeks. We enjoyed doing business with you and we will pass along the good word. It was a good experience and we really pleased with KIBO.” - Penny, Molly, Jamie and Chris

“Once again you and your fine organization have come through for Judy and I. And, once again Rod Rowan was at the forefront shepparding the purchase of a new (used) boat for us. The logistics of this purchase were difficult; however, Rod was on top of it all the way. Great job!” - George & Judy Weckel, M/V “SEA BONDS”

From the drafting table of the legendary Ted Gozzard, the Bayfield 36 has been called a Contemporary Classic, with its head-turning classic clipper style bow, handsomely carved teak trail boards and wine glass stern. Her construction and materials utilized the very latest in fiberglass boat building technology. The sheer line is a work of beauty and the modified full keel has a cut-away forefoot to give the tracking benefits of a full keel, but with increased maneuverability in tight quarters. She is a safe and comfortable cruising boat, perfect for weekend cruising and ruggedly built for blue water passage making.

“Verity” is all of this and so very much more- a Bayfield so much beyond the others that there really is no comparison. As a broker, I have seen thousands and thousands of boats. I can count on my hands how many vessels I have seen that have received the care and attention to detail that “Verity” has received. She is obviously the lucky recipient of a truly discerning owner. Everywhere you look there are improvements he has done- some big, some little touches. Storage throughout has been improved, modified and added everywhere. Little features have been added everywhere you look to make living aboard more comfortable. Everything has been thought of, tended to and been done in true proper yacht fashion. To list every little detail he has added or modified is pointless- she’s just flat out gorgeous and needs to be seen to be truly appreciated.
