Our very own Lisa Clayton has just posted two amazing wins back-to-back.  Key West and Charleston!

Lisa and Bruce and their boat were featured in a recent article in Sailing World after their amazing series of wins at Key West.   Here is the story:

Key West gave Bruce a rude welcome.  Having spent some time knocking around the cans on Chesapeake Bay, the jolly restaurateur from Annapolis, Md., brought his Beneteau 10M L’Outrage to Key West Race Week for the first time in 1997.

Like many skippers, Gardner gathered his team for a Sunday practice session before the start of racing the following day. They sailed from their berth on Stock Island to the Key West Bight to pick up a member of the crew, then turned around, and set the spinnaker for the run out to the practice area. “We came to an area where the waves were all confused,” Gardner recalls. “I overcompensated, and the boat started rocking. The spinnaker pole dug into a wave, and the pressure of the pole against the mast broke the mast.”  L’Outrage limped back toward shore, the crew defeated before the racing had even begun. “On the way in, I was like, ‘God, we’ve come all this way. We can’t give up now,’” says Gardner. “We resolved then and there to do everything humanly possible to make the first start.”  There were no spars available on the island, so they called a rigger in Gainesville. “We got the guy on the phone—he was on the couch watching football—and convinced him to go check his shed for a mast section,” says Gardner.  The rigger located a mast section that would fit, and Gardner sent a few crew members—college sailors from St. Mary’s—on the 1,000-mile round trip.  “I gave the kids the keys to my Explorer and told them to step on it,” he says.  Gardner and the remaining crew then headed over to Robbie’s Boatyard, where they pulled an all-nighter replacing the damaged rigging and cutting out the broken mast section. By the time the St. Mary’s kids arrived with the mast section at 7 a.m.

Monday morning, the team was ready to rivet it into place. A boatyard employee hopped on the crane, and the crew quickly stepped the mast.  “We tuned the rig on the way out to the racecourse and made the first race by 30 minutes,” says Gardner. “We didn’t do that well in the regatta [12th place in the 17-boat  PHRF 6 division], but we had fun.  The challenge of doing better was what brought me back.” Quantum Key West 2012 marked the regatta’s 25th anniversary and the 13th time Gardner and L’Outrage have returned to the scene of their inauspicious debut. Over the years, Gardner has crafted a Race Week routine that fosters a fun-loving, communal spirit amongst his crew and pays dividends on the racecourse. The key to the team’s success is that everyone contributes equally; there are no rock stars. “When you get to the dock, bring beer and leave your ego,” says the skipper whose smile never fades from his chubby, sunburned cheeks. “When we get down to the boat, I don’t have to ask somebody to pump the bilge. It just gets done.” When it comes to making an expensive undertaking such as Key West work, there’s an unwritten contract between Gardner and his crew. “We all know what we’re signing up for,” says mainsail trimmer Warren Richter.

“We’re going to be eating most of our meals at the house. We don’t expect a pile of team gear. This year, we each got a shirt and a hat.  I’d rather have Bruce spend his money on new sails and keep the boat going fast.” In addition, crew members do what they can to keep costs down. Longtime friend Thom “Tommy Two Beers” Bowen drives the rig down from Annapolis at a discounted rate. Trimmer Scott Gitchell brings his scuba gear and goes for a pre-race dip each day to polish the bottom. Besides handling pit duties, Gardner’s partner, Lisa Clayton, manages logistics. And except for professional tactician Ken Saylor, who manages the North Sails loft in Hampton Roads, Va., every member of the crew pays to play.

“We all chip in,” says McKee. “We understand that if it were up to Bruce to pay for everything, we wouldn’t  be here.” Gardner may not lavish his crew, but he treats them like family and never fails to show his appreciation. He shows the same affection toward L’Outrage, which he refers to as “the old girl.” With its clean entry and flat bottom, the Finot/Faus design was ahead of its time when it rolled out of the factory in 1983, and Gardner has tricked out the 34-footer with a larger sail plan and a more ergonomic cockpit.

The boat’s bottom and foils receive constant attention, and new sails arrive whenever the budget allows. L’Outrage crew members take their racing a lot more seriously than they take one another. Everyone has a nickname. Gardner is “Big Papa.” Because of his collection of khaki shorts embroidered with tiny whales and other nautical fare, bowman Paul Ford is “Pretty Boy.” The responsible one, trimmer Kevin McKee, is “Grandpa.” Trimmer Stuart Forrest, who hails from across the pond, is “The Englishman.” They don’t claim to be creative.

After two days of big-breeze racing in the turquoise waters off the contiguous United States’ southernmost point, Tuesday night found Gardner busying himself in the tiny kitchen at the team’s lodgings, a nondescript, and single-story rental off the tourist map in Key West’s New Town neighborhood. Air mattresses and spray tops crowded the floors of the bunk rooms, where sailors sleep three apiece, and the Washington Capitols faced off against the New York Islanders on the TV.  Gardner has operated restaurants in Cape Cod and Boston, Mass., and Washington D.C., and will soon open his latest near City Dock in Annapolis. As he fixed his signature regatta meal—rosemary-encrusted pork tenderloin, garlic potatoes, curried black beans, fresh greens—the 57-year old explained how he manages to keep Race Week expenses from getting out of hand. “Blue collar, blue collar, blue collar,” he said over a stiff rum drink. “We’re a blue-collar program.” Richter, who has raced with several programs, says the teamwork aboard L’Outrage is unlike any he’s experienced. “It’s a very team-oriented dynamic,” he says. “Everyone knows their responsibilities, but everyone also helps out with each others’ jobs.” Ford credits the supportive dynamic on board to Gardner’s calm demeanor. “Bruce is extremely laid-back,” says the bowman,who availed himself of the romantic setting of nearby Sunset Key to propose to his girlfriend: she said yes.

“The only time you ever hear from him, he’s either complimenting you or giving you words of encouragement. One thing he never does is scream.” After five races, L’Outrage entered Thursday’s competition trailing Gerry Taylor’sCape Fear 38 Tangent by 1 point in the 11-boat PHRF 2 division. “Thursday was a big day for us,” says Ford. “The conditions were light, which was challenging for us, since the boat tends to do better in heavy air. It was important for us to switch gears.  Whenever  we’d feel the boat slow down, we’d power up to get back in the groove.

Downwind, everybody was really sensitive to keeping the boat balanced just right.” Gardner has refined his downwind technique since the wipeout of ’97, and his driving helped L’Outrage leg out on the runs. “We tried to get on the waves and surf as much as we could,” he says. “Plus, I’m getting better at sailing by the lee. I can keep the boat right on the edge, and nobody says anything. We all understand that if the boat gets unstable, all I have to do is head up one or two degrees.” Aided by a collision between Tangent and the Soverel 33 Renegade in Race 6, which resulted in dual disqualifications, L’Outrage won all three races on Thursday. “Everything just seemed to come together so well for us,” says Clayton. “It all seemed orchestrated.  Everyone had his head in the game, adjusting and tweaking. I’ve never had a day of racing quite like it.” As they headed for shore, the crew knew they’d done something special. “The mood onboard as we were motoring in was electric,” says Richter.

“We knew we’d given ourselves a shot at winning the series. To conclude Thursday’s post-race gathering at Kelly’s Caribbean Bar, emcee and Division 1 principal race officer Ken Legler prepped the crowd for the announcement of the Boat of the Day. Given their three-bullet performance, Gardner and crew assumed they were in the running for the award.  Decked out in blue polo shirts, they assembled near the stage. When Legler announced the winner—Glenn Darden’s J/80 Le Tigre, which had also notched three firsts—the disappointment on the faces of the L’Outrage crew was short-lived. “They deserve the award,” said Gardner as he headed to dinner, the team’s one splurge, at the Brazilian steakhouse Braza Leña. The team wasn’t about to get hung up on daily prizes. “On Thursday night,” says Ford, “all we cared about was getting a meal in our bellies, getting a good night’s sleep, and putting our game faces on for the next day.”

 L’Outrage carried a 13-point lead over second placed Tangent going into Friday’s racing, but the team didn’t let up. Gardner couldn’t help but start aggressively in Race 9, and the team rode a front-row start to another win. The regatta was in the bag, but Gardner wasn’t ready to quit. “Before the last race,” says Saylor, “I turned to Bruce and said, ‘You know, we can go in if we want. We’ve already won, and we’ll be first to the hoist.’ But Bruce was like, ‘Nope. That wouldn’t be the Corinthian thing to do. We’re sailing.’”  The team took second-place in Race 10 and wrapped up the series with a 13-point lead. It wasn’t the first time Gardner won his division in Key West—’Outrage won PHRF 7 in 2000 and took PHRF 5 in 2006—but it might have been his sweetest victory. “Everything just worked so well,” says Gardner. “I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. But it didn’t.  I mean, sometimes you’ll have a race like that, but a whole series?  Never.” He didn’t forget to thank his 29-year old boat, either. “The old girl’s been really good to us,” he says. “I just hope she doesn’t make me wait another six years to win again.” Having resisted temptation all week—mostly—the crew let loose on Friday night, comforted by the knowledge of what Saturday morning would bring.

“When I wake up with a hangover, and my head is throbbing, I know everything’s going to be alright,” says Richter. “Because at some point, Bruce is going to holler down the hall, ‘Breakfast is ready,’ and there’s going to be a big plate of eggs, sausage, and hash browns waiting for me at the table.”

 “When you get to the dock, bring beer and leave your ego,” saysL’Outrage skipper Bruce Gardner. “Everybody has a job to do, and they’re willing to do it. When we get down to the boat,  I don’t have to ask somebody to pump the bilge. It just gets done.”

Ken started boating with his  family at age 8 in small outboard power boats on Long Island Sound.  His sailing didn’t start until a friend taught him to sail in 1970.  Then he fell in love with the experience of moving silently through the water using his wits and the wind.  Although he prefers sailing when there is wind, he still enjoys a power boat when there is no wind.  After owning and chartering several boats, Ken and his wife moved onto a new 40′ Caliber sailboat in the spring of 1999.  They lived aboard for the next two years while Ken was  installing the electronics, systems and other equipment they would need. In February of 2001 after 36 years of practicing law, Ken retired.  Because of his various skills, the marina they were living in hired him as a mechanic and a rigger.

When his wife retired in June of that year their sailing adventure got underway.  They cruised the East coast from Maine to the Florida Keys and out to the Bahamas until November 2003 when they settled in Edgewater just South of Annapolis. Then, Ken went to work on the Annapolis-based schooner Woodwind and was in the crew during the filming of the movie WeddingCrashers.  He had acquired a 50 ton Coast Guard license and in the spring of 2005 got certified as an instructor by the American Sailing
Association (ASA).  He has taught sailing at Chesapeake Sailing School, Annapolis Sailing School and The Sailing Academy and guesses he has taught well over one hundred people to sail.

Ken’s friendly attitude and excellent knowledge of boats will stand him in good stead as he starts his new career as a broker for Crusader Yachts.

In January, broker  Scott Taylor travelled with clients Cary & Martha Thomson to inspect and then survey a lovely  53 Selene Pilothouse Trawler  in Ft. Lauderdale. The Thompsons are long time and experienced sailors who in recent years have raced and cruised their Sabre 452 “Freedom” offshore. The decision having been made to cross over to power, the Thomsons wanted to retain their ability to cruise long range. We inspected a range of prospective boats in the Mid-Atlantic area.

After inspecting a twin screw Selene 53, (really cherry boat) here in Annapolis, the Thomson’s set their sights on a single screw sister ship that is set up with a “wing” get-home engine and Wesmar Stabalizers. These hydraulic actuated fins allow for dampening the natural rolling motion up to 80/90 percent. The main engine is a reliable Cummins “Q” series giving about 420hp.

Over the past decade, Jet-Tern Marine has been refining this model (they are up to ninety boats) such that it is now very competitive with more expensive yachts. In a 2005 model year we were relieved to find that the survey punch list was all small stuff. Being a full on displacement hull, she has great range and we are hoping to hear from the Thomsons from far reaching ports! Congrats to Martha & Cary!

Mike joined Crusader Yacht Sales in the fall of 2010 and bought Crusader in October of 2011. He is a lifelong sailor and true industry professional.

Growing up on Lake Erie near Mentor Harbor Yacht Club, sailing/boating was the family sport. Living on the water, it was easier to dinghy to the club than walk or ride a bike. So dinghies and small sailboats were just part of the landscape. A product of the Jr Junior Sailing program at MHYC, Mike sailed the Sprites, El Toros, FJs, Lasers, Thistles and the likes as a youth. When Mike turned twelve the family purchased their first “big boat”, a C&C 33 and the racing itch was scratched. Subsequent boats included a C&C custom 40 and C&C custom 42. In 1994 Mike bought an old J24 and started paving his own sailing roads. The J24 was sold in 2011, but the stable at Eastport YC still has a Snipe, Opti and 19′ Apex RIB for the Titgemeyer family enjoyment. Mike’s sailing achievements include, several regatta wins at local and national events and quite a few miles offshore (over 6,000) to destinations like Bermuda and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Whether daysailing with the family or offshore racing with friends, sailing and the enjoyment of the water has remained a constant for Mike and his family.

Professionally, Mike has been blessed to have always worked in the marine industry. Through High School and College college he worked and managed a small rigging shop in Grand River, Ohio, just up the street from the Tartan and Douglas McLeod boat shops. In 1996 Mike started his professional entanglement with Tartan, first as Service Manager and then working into the National Sales Manager position for Tartan Yachts. In 2001 Mike relocated to Annapolis to open the first of the Tartan C&C “factory” dealerships. Over those years, Mike had several years leading the Tartan C&C dealer network in sales, along with managing the three offices on the Chesapeake Bay.

In 2010, with the sale of Tartan Marine Company(Builder of the C&C Tartan & Legacy brands) and closing of the “factory” dealerships. Also in 2010, Tartan Marine Company was sold and the “factory” dealerships were closed. Mike was recruited to join Crusader Yacht Sales to continue selling the brands(and others) he has represented for almost fifteen years.

Mike was a welcome addition to the Crusader Yacht Sales team. His 15 years of experience selling Tartan and C&C made him a valuable resource. He is respected and well liked in the industry and has a strong following of loyal customers. Having delivered over a 100 new boats, his product knowledge and professional approach are unsurpassed.

 Scott Taylor, CPYB, had the pleasure of working with the Crafton family in 2002. His charge was to assist them in the purchase of a durable and safe cruising cutter that would accommodate a family of five. After numerous boat evaluations and shopping around, they settled on a 43’ Hans Christian, rigged as a ketch. It took 8 days from St. Michaels, and we really enjoyed the boat, despite 100+ degree temps!  It’s easy to handle and a pleasure without winches and sails and sheets……..

She performed well even thru a severe thunderstorm approaching Oriental.

What’s a Bruckmann, Anyway?

You Know, there are tons of boats out there, and I’m not half bad at picking them out, but when I saw an ad for a Bruckmann 34e during Prop Talk’s layout process a couple of months ago, I had to investigate. Crusader Yachts in Annapolis happens to be the East Coast dealer for the brand, so I got in touch with Nancy Cann and arranged for a ride.

You may not recognize the brand name, but you’ll certainly notice the designer’s: Mark Ellis. Ellis was an apprentice at the famous powerboat design offices of C. Raymond Hunt and takes many cues from his drawing table. Lately, Ellis has turned his eye toward Bruckmann Yachts of Mississauga, Ontario (Canada), where he’s turning out designs for the semi-custom firm.

I headed down to Port Annapolis for a ride on a hot and sunny June day, and the boat was immediately noticeable from a distance: lots of beautiful teak structural units and accents, a glossy navy hull, and a smart pocket-cruiser design.

As we motored into the Severn River out of Back Creek, what was most evident was the boat’s ability to rise out of being a displacement hull to planning at only 12 knots with help of the quiet 440-horsepower Yanmar diesel. Even with a moderate chop, the boat handled smoothly and turned without the usual rolling of similar hull designs. In short; a beautiful ride.

 Because this 1984 boat was unique, establishing fair market value for the bank was a bit of a challenge. In this case the published numbers were incorrectly low. By working closely  with Laurie Kiser of Just Boat Loans, we were able to help the bank understand the true value of the boat.  This was done by presenting the history of the builder Sam Morse and also by documenting the many upgrades made by the sellers.  The Dawsons were pleased with the loan.  The Planks also understood the importance of being able to establish a fair market value to the bank – without it, selling the boat would have been much more difficult.

Hopefully this points to a thawing out in the credit world!  It definitely points to the one of the many ways the services of a professional broker can help buyer and seller achieve their goals.

We have worked hard to grow and evolve the business during this difficult time and it is paying dividends!

Compared to 2008:

Here are some frequently asked questions:

Q:  How do you know how much your website increased?

A:  Google Analytics is a very powerful tool.

1. We can generate many different reports: by day, month, content viewed, geographic area, etc.

2. We know, for example that in December 2009, we had visitors from 73 countries. Our international visitors have risen dramatically.

3. We can tell average number of pages viewed, average time spent on the site, what pages were viewed. It is fun and exciting to see, and it is tempting to over-analyze numbers, but we are monitoring trends to make sure that we are on the right track. Very powerful stuff.

Q:  That is remarkable, especially considering that much of the marine industry experienced decreases around 40%.  How did you do it?

A:  Obviously, it is the result of a lot of factors:

1. Our staff are great professionals – they are experienced, successful brokers. We are all credentialed “CPYB” brokers. Our brokers represent a diverse cross section of both sail and power, not limiting CYS to a niche.

2. We changed our emphasis from print ads to a more Internet-based marketing approach. This successful campaign was designed to:

i. Increase search engine optimization.

ii. Target specific buyers

iii. Increase the visibility of individual listings

Q:  As a seller, I don’t understand how increased general website activity helps sell my boat.  Wouldn’t an ad in one of the magazines with my boat listed be better?

A:  Increased activity equals an increase in personal contacts.  Ask any real estate agent, and they will tell you ads for particular houses and open houses are mainly done to make the seller happy, and to entice other sellers to list with them.  Rarely do sales come from direct inquiries on a particular boat.

1. Our job as a professional broker to is match buyers with sellers.

2. Once we establish that someone is considering buying a boat, we go through a process to help the buyers find the right boat. Often, it is not the boat that started our conversation.

3. So, you can see that it is truly a “numbers game.” The more potential buyers we talk to, the more boats we sell. Since “All boats rise on the tide,” all boats listed by Crusader will benefit.

4. It is much easier to point to an ad in one of the magazines than to explain some of the rather high-tech methods we are using now to promote our company and our listings, but we think that sellers are savvy enough to realize that times have changed.

5. Of course, we do still advertise in magazines, just not as much as we did before. We have actually increased our marketing budget.

Q:  But what will you do for my boat?

Q:  I saw your display in Tent C at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October.  Was that your first time with a tent display?

A:  Yes.  In addition to the wonderful Pacific Seacraft display on Dock C, we also had a completely new display on land, featuring our beautiful brokerage boats, and new Pacific Seacrafts and Bruckmanns.

1. We started with a blank slate, and designed a booth that showcased our unique blend of hi-tech marketing and friendly brokers. We had a great slide show of our brokerage boats on a 48″ TV, as well as two computers with monitors and Internet connections to enable brokers to have detailed, productive conversations with buyers and sellers.

2. The fresh, modern look of the display received lots of compliments. This exposure definitely helped us finish 2009 with a flourish – December was one of our best months ever!

It is with great sadness that I report Bill’s death.  Not only was he a good man, he left behind a strong legacy of wonderful boat designs, including, of course, the Pacific Seacraft 31, 34, 37, 40, 40PH, and 44.  It made him very happy knowing that so many people were enjoying their Pacific Seacrafts.

For years, Bill and Lynne attended our Open Houses at Crusader Yacht Sales.  Those of us who were fortunate to meet them; listen to the stories of his adventures, and hear him expalin his design philosophy, and to see Lynne’s beautiful paintings, will never forget it. 

I remember him often as I see the many beautiful Pacific Seacrafts at our office and hear from Pacific Seacraft owners how much they love their boats. 

He will be sorely missed.

Broker SCOTT TAYLOR and his spouse Susan recently had the pleasure of sailing with veteran sailor Arthur Birney aboard his 48 Cherubini “Adventurer.” Art sponsored Severna Park Scout Troop #450 for an afternoon sail as arranged by Susan on behalf of the  National Sailing Hall of Fame.

Boarding “Adventurer” is akin to taking a step back in time due to the old world craftsmanship and Hereshoff inspired design. She is schooner rigged with a magnificent clipper bow.

CYS had the pleasure of hosting Jarvis Newman of Southwest Harbor, Maine who recounted his fifty years in the business of building downeast lobster boats. Jarvis learned fiberglass construction initially at Hinckley Yachts and then moved on to build lobster boats in his own facility. He married the daughter of boatbuilder Raymond Ellis and went on to build some of the loveliest boats ever to ply the waters of the Maine Coast and beyond.

Free Sail 2009

Annapolis Community Boating, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making boating accessible and affordable to all Anne Arundel County residents, is offering free sailing and kayaking lessons and boat rides at City Dock on Sundays from noon to 4, starting in mid-April.

The first session on April 19 features a half-dozen keel boats provided by Chesapeake Regional Accessible Boating (CRAB). Professional instructors will be on hand to teach the basics and skipper the boats. Students of all ages are welcome. No experience is necessary, but reservations are required. Sign up by phoning 410-268-1500 or e-mailing info@annapolisboating.org.

Boats will be available at the National Sailing Hall of Fame docks at the northeast end of City Dock. Subsequent Sundays will feature lessons and rides on dinghies, kayaks, J-105s and other boats.

This was my fourth trip with Kyle and due to his congenial nature it’s as though you are fishing with a longtime friend. His boat was a 25′ center console powered by a single Yamaha outboard. No canvass to get in the way of light tackle. An ideal platform in September, passable into November but by December when the fishing is really heating up it was a bit shy on protecting the crew from the weather. A friend of mine described our December outings as “full combat” fishing.

On our outing on the 27^th, Kyle made mention of the fact that he was considering moving into a new boat that would offer his parties some shelter. Between Christmas and New Years we met in Shady Side, Md. and inspected a 29′ C-Hawk that immediately seemed to fit the bill. This boat has an inside steering station (small pilothouse), and a large cockpit half of which is protected by a hardtop with side curtains. Now we are talking about some crew comfort! The C-Hawk also is rigged with a hydraulic steering station in the cockpit such that the Captain can be part of the action.

Within a couple of weeks of the “boat discovery”, Kyle had an accepted offer subject to surveys and sea trials. Surveyor Tarn Kelsey proved to be very knowledgeable in regard to this craft having had prior experience with the boat. Under Tarn’s guidance we were able to achieve an extra knot and a half at wide open throttle. Not a “big deal” but nice to have the extra speed in the bank! Settlement was on a cold February day (Kyle’s birthday) at the offices of Crusader Yacht Sales. This was an early boat sale on the 2009 calendar and as a result Kyle will be ready to go on opening day in April.

Once Terry Brady (buyer) made a close personal inspection of the boat, he was comfortable in moving forward with surveys and sea trials. I coordinated this with Hartoft Marine Survey and scheduled a quick-haul at Bert Jabins Marina.

“Whirlwind” was exceptionally well prepared for survey and sea trials, right down to the safety equipment being up to date and all in place. A well prepared boat can be surveyed more thoroughly and in fewer hours than the average boat.
The seller’s mechanics commissioned all of the boats systems in advance, and riggers had the sails bent on a day in advance. What a difference this makes on survey day! The post survey punch list required the hot water heater be re-set, a couple of cockpit scupper hoses be replaced (they might have lasted another five years but better safe than sorry), and replacement of a couple of defunct GFI receptacles.

As the buyer was unable to attend the sea trial, Gary went through the boat from stem to stern with a Dictaphone to be transcribed into an up to date operations manual for the boat. This is intended to save the new owner hours of re-inventing the wheel!

Finding the right buyer for “Whirlwind” took several months longer than we anticipated, perhaps due to prevailing market conditions. My first visit to the boat was with the mast down and the boat in a dark shed, far Downeast on the Maine Coast. Perhaps one of the ultimate cruising destinations in the world but not an accelerator in getting prospective buyers aboard! With “Whirlwind” relocated to Annapolis this past September, it was in a choice position to be shown during the Annapolis Sailboat Show and subsequently over the winter.  “Whirlwind” will be missed here on the Chesapeake but is clearly in good hands!

Ode to the Sock Burners

Them Eastport boys got an odd tradition
When the sun swings to its Equinoxical position,
They build a little fi re down along the docks,
They doff their shoes and they burn their winter socks.

Yes, they burn their socks at the Equinox;
You might think that’s peculiar, but I think it’s not,
See, they’re the same socks they put on last fall,
And they never took ‘em off to wash ‘em, not at all.

So they burn their socks at the Equinox
In a little ol’ fi re burning nice and hot.
Some think incineration is the only solution,
‘Cause washin’ ‘em contributes to the Chesapeake’s pollution.

Through the spring and the summer and into the fall,
They go around not wearin’ any socks at all,
Just stinky bare feet stuck in old deck shoes,
Whether out on the water or sippin’ on a brew.

So if you sail into the Harbor on the 21st of March,
And you smell a smell like Limburger sauteed with laundry starch,
You’ll know you’re downwind of the Eastport docks
Where they’re burning their socks for the Equinox.

*One exception to this rule: If on a given day the temperature drops below 30° Fahrenheit and the wind gusts over 17 knots, one can wimp out and don socks. This is known as the “Wimp-Chill Factor.”

This winter however we had a few weeks reminder of what it can be like on the Chesapeake in cold weather! I have been working with Neil Jordaan towards the purchase of a lovely 44’ Mason sloop built in Asia by “Ta Shing” or Pacific Asian Enterprises. For those not familiar with these boats, they represent (in my opinion) the top of the food chain for boats manufactured in the Far East. Every aspect of the boat from the GRP tooling to the interior fit and finish is just exemplary. The metal components, wiring, and rigging also are to high yacht standards.

On first inspection of the Mason there was two inches of solid ice locking the boat in her slip. For the preliminary survey I used my weight in a RIB to break enough of the ice around the boat to allow for Marine Surveyor Bob Skord to get a thorough look at the hull sides. The following week gave us a warmer weather window in which to move the boat across the Inner Harbor to Boston Street for a “quick haul” and return trip sea trial.

After a full evaluation of the boat and the review of a perfunctory punch list with Captain Simon Lont, Neil Jordaan is starting to realize that he is purchasing a very special yacht! The Mason’s are a traditional hull form with overhangs that are no longer popular in yacht design. She is full-keeled with a cutaway fore-foot so no speed demon. I would venture though that Neil will sail this boat many miles before he ever gets a sense that the boat is pounding into a head-sea.

So, I set out to be a crew member on the svSpirit on her return trip from Bermuda to Long Island, NY following the Newport-Bermuda race. The captain, Kris, knew I had limited experience and wasn’t expecting much. My challenge was to set aside any feelings of insecurity and show these men my determination to make a positive contribution to the voyage. Later, I would learn how life aboard Spirit would test my limits while boosting my confidence exponentially. If there is a zeitgeist of sailing it lives aboard the svSpirit.

I arrived in Bermuda on Friday with an expected departure date of Sunday. This gave me a chance to get to know the crew, the vessel, swim, dance and party. These traditional bonding experiences paled in comparison to the unity forged on the open sea.

First day out the captain caught a fish – a mahi mahi. I was asked to cook this priceless meal. I’d never eaten a fish much less cooked one. In the back of my mind were all the “stupid Sue” tapes I’d accumulated over the years waiting to derail me. Quicker than you can say zip drive every program I ever viewed involving a frying pan flashed before my mind. What would Rachel Ray do? I had written one simple “lesson plan” for myself: no excuses, no complaints, stay positive. With just an alcohol stove and minimal spices I simmered the fish in the pan along with melted butter with lemon zest, onion, salt and pepper. It was pronounced “very good.” And know what? – I’m pretty good too! Before I could say “yeah me”, I felt my temperature rising and my knees getting shaky. Quickly, I embraced the life line while tossing my fish back into the sea. The creatures of the deep did not look kindly upon this fact. One thing’s for sure, the sea doesn’t give you much time to wax poetic before bringing you back down to reality. There is absolutely no graceful way to lose your lunch. Sadly, no more fish were caught on this voyage. Even the occasional flying fish who visited the boat avoided me. They only appeared when I was not on watch.

Just before sunset that first day, the winds began to build and we reefed the sail. When the captain said, point her into the wind – the boat responded effortlessly to my touch and the skipper realized perhaps he had a crew member with more skills than anticipated. The stars seemed to say “welcome back” on night watch. This was to be only my second sail upon the ocean. This voyage would also teach me new respect for the ocean’s power.

The rest of the voyage would be marked by storms – at least five in total. The second storm was the worst. The engine was not running due to a battery issue (which due to the ingenuity of the skipper proved to be a temporary problem). When summoned at 2:00 a.m. for duty I thought I was just coming on night watch when I popped my head outside. The skipper barked out an order to put on my safety gear. On deck the wind was blowing hard – at least 35 – 40 mph. My job was to hold the boat into the wind while Kris and Eric reefed the main. It took every last bit of energy I had in me but, come hell or high water (and I think I was experiencing both) failure was not an option. It seemed like it took a long time but I’m sure it was mere minutes before we were underway again. My adrenaline was pumping at this point and I was anxious to stay on deck and assist. My pride was hurt when asked to go below. Then, the reality of the situation hit me. A third man on deck was not needed. And, the skipper and first mate, Eric, would tire and need relief. They went into protection mode and stayed on deck to 6:00 am. When they finally allowed me to relieve them I returned the favor – I let them sleep until past noon.

When Kris and Eric woke up rested it hit them who had been steering for several hours. The rain had stopped but the winds had not diminished. Yet, wonder of wonders, we were on course. This simple fact brought new respect for me. The skipper was wise and experienced but he still needed a crew. Adversity had expanded everyone’s trust in each other. Then, we realized how hungry everyone was. Eric made cup of noodles – they never tasted better!
It had been a difficult start to the day. My arms were tired but my spirit felt invincible. I had experienced my first ocean storm, met my fears, and conquered them.

Throughout the remaining days the crew gathered in the cockpit during the mid-day hours. I don’t know why but I find watching the waves mesmerizing. The vast horizon seems to open the mind. Kris and Eric came to America from Poland. Kris’s work with Solidarity caused his exile from Poland. He was keenly aware of America as the seat of democracy. When they learned I taught History and Government the discussions turned to comparative politics. I had visited Poland in 1974. But, truth-be-told we were all there to have fun and sail. What I enjoyed most were his stories of his adventures building boats and racing sailing dinghies back in the day in Poland.

Other discussions were of a more personal nature. The open horizon seems to allow people to bare their soul. Trust took on a more personal meaning as crew members shared their stories. Life is not always kind. But, alone on a 38 foot sailboat sharing distant problems allowed our little crew to identify themselves, drop our worries and just be. Here we were three people in a boat as unique and different as could be. One single, one twice divorced, and one married 32 years. I think that just about covers the full range of traditional relationships.

Later in the voyage, an unknown short in the electrical system had drained our battery. We were without an engine or power in the Gulf Stream. The problem was correctable but for the moment, with light winds, we were doing negative V.M.G. at one point. Unseen problems can either draw the crew together or splinter the group into opinionated nay-sayers. svSpirit worked her charms. Our crew focused on solving the problem. The skipper, Kris, used a flexcell solar panel attached directly to the starting battery to restore the necessary voltage to start the engine. The solution took about 3 ½ days with storms. Which meant we had plenty of time to appreciate the warm waves of the Gulf Stream splashing over the boat. Then, just after a brief storm we were becalmed. During a hot, slow moment about 100 dolphins appeared out of nowhere. They hung around for quite a while – a squad of Neptune’s cheerleaders come to encourage us along the way. Awesome!

On the 5th day we were motoring through calm seas and fishing – no fish (they don’t forget do they?) Everyone was happy to be close to our destination and enjoying calm waters. Then Kris spotted a family of whales. I didn’t see the baby jump but I did see the fluke of the parent whale just off the bow. They are such massive, graceful creatures which you just don’t get to see on the Chesapeake Bay. Ocean sailing has its rewards!

Approaching NY while engulfed in yet another storm, Eric, saw a white flare while at the helm. Skipper, Kris, called the Coast Guard. This sighting was confirmed over the radio by svSwift. Later, Eric saw the lights of a helicopter sent to investigate the scene. It was a solemn moment. Despite mishaps, we survived the storms and were less than 100 miles from port. Someone else was not as lucky.

The last leg of the trip past Fire Island light into Long Island sound was slow. The winds had died. The diesel supply had been expended so it was to be a slow sail into port. But, it was a wondrous conclusion to our adventure together. I had never seen Long Island from the water and was thoroughly transfixed by the slowing emerging panorama of sights on shore. We anchored briefly to allow the winds to build and enjoyed our last meal aboard svSprit – our restaurant by the sea.

After a full day of sailing we approached the fuel dock we had been directed to by Kris’s friend, Bill. Cell phones – got to love them! The fuel dock, the Bayshore Marina, was inside a cut shared by high speed ferries. We were doing about 1 knot. I saw a puff ahead about 500 feet and asked the captain permission to put the boat on wing and wing. It was time for this Chesapeake Bay sailor to show this captain what many summer hours in light winds had taught me. With the puff we got up to 2.4 knots – enough to slip through the cut before the next ferry made its’ appearance. The skipper took the helm and we docked for fuel – my first land in almost 7 days. The wonders of a flush toilet are not to be underestimated!

Back at port, the crew was invited to a beach party on Jones Beach with a local band. After 7 days at sea dancing was the way to celebrate! Later the crew was invited to an after party for the band at a magnificent home on Long Island. The music was grand and the company spontaneous and talented. Our hosts were a beautiful couple who seemed to have stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine. They could not have been more gracious.

While at the beach I could see the harbor light we’d passed many hours before aboard svSpirit. At the party, there were boats docked in the canal adjacent to the home of our hosts. Despite a hot shower, cooked food, clean clothes and elegant surroundings, a little piece of me wasn’t ready to leave the adventure of sailing behind.

Would I crew alone again? Yes! It made me rely and build on my own skills. It allowed me to gain the trust of new, more experienced sailors and learn from them. What‘s really cool is how total strangers who love sailing can bond quickly and get the job done while having fun. Eric told me later that the skipper, Kris, wasn’t expecting much and was surprised. I did not know what to expect and was amazed.

What new adventure awaits me? Where will it be?

This voyage was made possible through the assistance of a volunteer crew recruited largely through the Cruising Rally Association. Steve Black, organizer of the event, directed Sue and Glenn toward experienced sailors who graciously volunteered their time and talents to help them sail to Bermuda. Despite pre-trip checklists and the purchase of spare parts, the passage was not without challenges. Despite the unanticipated repairs and resulting frayed nerves, it was the trip of a lifetime.
The voyage taught Sue and Glenn more about all aspects of sail trim, boat maintenance, navigation, crew management, right down to tying knots than could have been learned in five years of Bay sailing. It also demonstrated for us the wonder of passage making. One night Glenn went forward and listened to the blow holes of a pod of dolphins cavorting in the bow waves and setting off the phosphorescence in the ocean. The sunsets were incredible. The stars at night seemed like the face of God encircling the earth with love and majesty. The clean smell and rich blue of the ocean fills each moment of the day with potential. Each day at sea introduced us to something new: flying fish, steering in a following sea, spotting whales, and dodging flying squid (*very small creatures). We even maneuvered at close range at night in order to assist a fellow Rally member with a gift of needed fuel.
We would not recommend this trip be undertaken by new sailors without a seasoned crew. On more than one occasion the experience of valued crew members saved the day. Also, outside of close friends, selecting crew through a private organization, such as the Cruising Rally Association, as opposed to a public access crew list is the best way to assure compatible, able sailors who own boats of comparable size will join you.
We have chosen to make sailing part of the tie that binds as our children begin their adult lives. This trip put us on track to realize our goal to be two upon an ocean. TwoBySea proved herself to be our faithful ally in that endeavor. We still have much to learn, but much more to look forward to.
