JARVIS NEWMAN

Downeast Boatbuilding Legend

Jarvis Newman, of Southwest Harbor, Maine, is probably the most famous “Downeast” boat builder in the country. His name is virtual royalty when it comes to Downeast boats and you are lucky if your boat is associated with him. When it comes to New England built Lobster Boats, the real beauty is in the quality and design of the hull and the sexiness of the sheer line and Jarvis Newman is the master of that world. Mr. Newman has been building boats most of his life, along with many other marine related adventures. His relationships with the best designers and other “finishing yards” are wide and deep.

Mr. Newman has collaborated with the best of the best builders on the Maine Coast such as Ralph Stanley, Raymond Bunker and Ralph Ellis.

“Circumnavigating in Stages”
Burger and Nancy Zapf have sailed over 100,000 miles since leaving Germany in 1975 aboard their first boat Phantasus, a LeCompte Northeast 38 sloop. They eventually settled together with their two young daughters in Annapolis, where they enjoyed exploring the Chesapeake and the East Coast with their second boat Interlude, a Pacific Seacraft Crealock 31. Since retiring in 2001, they’ve been alternating cruising aboard Halekai, an Alden 50, with RV trips to Mexico, Alaska and out west aboard their Phoenix Cruiser 23. Burger combines cruising with medical volunteer work while Nancy has been active as a board member of Seven Seas Cruising Association. Halekai awaits them in Fiji, where they’ll be returning next month for the next leg of the journey around the world.
