Here’s a day from his log:

Sunday, July 2, 2006 – Atlantic Ocean

0015 – Breeze starting to develop, SSW at 10-15 knots. Heading 50 degrees wing and wing, making 6.0 knots.

0245 – Close to within 5.5 nms of Block I., to the South.

0545 – Winds pick up further and we reef the main and furl the genoa a quarter turn. Following seas adding excitement to the motion, and speed registering 8.5+ knots on the occasional “surf.” What a change from the first 24 hours.

1045 – Blistering up Buzzard’s Bay, wing and wing, at 7-8 knots. Register a high of 9.2 kts. SOG. Roughly a mile from Cleveland East ledge, furl genoa and proceed to Cape Cod Canal under reefed mainsail alone.

1200 – Entering Cape Cod Canal with favorable current. Wave to Rob Barker aboard his boat, Melisma, at anchor in Crab Cove, just outside Onset Harbor. Hit 10.5 knots SOG going through the Canal. Engine on per regulations.

1225 – East end of the Canal. Still blowing hard – 15-20 knots from the SW. Gibed the main and turned North toward Maine. Heading 30 degrees magnetic. Still under single reefed main, doing 6.0 knots.

1645 – Spinnaker up, then down.

1800 – Dinner of lamb chops, new potatoes.

2000 - Wind has died…motoring
