The Matthews Boat Company was founded by Scott J. Matthews in 1898.  In 1906 the company moved to Port Clinton Ohio, where it prospered as a world-renowned builder of quality boats.

In 1913 Matthews built the first recreational vessel powered by diesel engines. The 110' Aeldgytha cruised 2,700 trouble free diesel powered miles on the Great Lakes, marking another first for Matthews in the recreational boat building industry.

Because of its world-wide reputation for quality Matthews built yachts for several luminaries such as W. E. Scripps, president of the Scripps Motor Co. and commodore of The Detroit Motor Boat Club, Charles E. Ringling of circus fame, who had Matthews build 6 yachts for him and the owner of  the Packard Automobile Company.

The US government had the company build vessels for the US Army in 1909, 110' sub chasers during World War I and landing craft in World War II.  In 1924 Matthews began building the first stock production boat in the industry... the  Matthews 38' "Special".  All recreational boats prior to that had been custom made.

In 1969 sensing the end of wooden yacht construction, Matthews contracted with Halamatic of England  to build 46' fiberglass hulls that were nearly identical to the Matthews 45' wooden hulls in weight, appearance, dimensions and performance.  The hulls were shipped to the Matthews factory where the cabins, bridges and interiors were built and engines were installed. Matthews was the only production powerboat in the US to carry a Lloyds of London certification.

Unfortunately the company switched to fiberglass construction too late and was a victim of the oil crisis and the US recession of the early 1970s .

"MOONGLOW III" is one of the last vessels built by Matthews and is a perfect example why Matthews had a reputation for unsurpassed quality.

Significant  Upgrades

Due to being continually upgraded and maintained to a very high standard, "MOONGLOW III", upon inspection, appears to be much, much younger than her age.  This is your chance to own a Lloyds certified classic vessel.
