2004 Oyster 53 Deck Saloon

Sail locker: The sail locker is located between the anchor locker and the forward head. Access is through a Lewmar hatch on deck. The sail locker bulkheads are watertight, creating two zones of protection and can be drained from inside the boat if necessary.

Forward head: Just aft of the sail locker and behind the second watertight bulkhead is the forward head. Entry is shared from both forward cabins. The unitized construction of the compartment provides for easy wipe-down maintenance and features a very nice non-skid sole. The fresh water flush electric toilet is to starboard. On port the sink has a locker beneath it and a mirrored door medicine cabinet above it. The wrap-around shower curtain and shower spray wand are mounted on an adjustable-height bar and centrally located between the sink and head. Lighting is provided by three overhead lights and an overhead hatch. Headroom in this space is 6’1” in the central area beneath the hatch and 5’10” on either side.

Starboard forward stateroom: Entry to this stateroom is off the shared corridor wall with the other forward stateroom. The 77” x 54” x 33” double berth lines the hullside and has four large dresser drawers beneath it along the corridor. Additionally, the entire area beneath the berth is a huge storage area and has been the primary spare parts location for the current owners. The bunk cushions are split in the middle and have lee clothes along the corridor and in the middle of the berth if desired for comfortable sleeping during passages. There is a small fiddled nightstand counter by the head of the bed with storage beneath it. At the forward end of the cabin is a hanging locker on starboard and a dressing mirror to port. Outboard and above the bunk is an opening porthole framed by a pair of drop-front door lockers. An overhead hatch and a Caframo fan provide additional ventilation, while a pair of reading lights and three ceiling lights keep the space well-lit and inviting. Headroom in this cabin is 6’4”.

Port forward stateroom: As you enter this stateroom from the saloon the bunk beds are to your left. Both berths are 6’5” long and have lee clothes. The upper berth has a pair of drop-down door lockers at either end framing an opening porthole. The lower berth has three drop-down door lockers above the bunk and two lockers below it. There are two reading lights, three overhead lights and a Caframo fan. Headroom is 6’2”.

Saloon: Moving aft from the forward guest cabins, you step up to enter the saloon.  Immediately on port is a large locker with two shelves, a drawer and a fiddled counter space above that. Above the counter and along the hull is a liquor cabinet.  Next aft of that is a loveseat, with storage beneath and behind it.  Above and behind that is a shelf space with an opening hullside port. To the left of the shelf is another locker with shelves.   

The C-shaped dinette on starboard has comfortable seating for six.  There are storage and machinery spaces behind and beneath the seating. The large custom cherry dinette table has a black ribbon inlay, is pedestal mounted and has a liquor cabinet storage beneath the pedestal.  A cherry grab bar is mounted on the table for a good hand hold moving through the space and the table leaf unfolds to provide dining space on the port settee.  Above and behind the dinette are lockers on either side of a shelf space with a custom fiddle.  There is an opening port in the hullside between the lockers.  The deck and saloon space have panoramic tinted windows all around, with opening windows on the forward portion on port and starboard.  Lighting and ventilation are provided by 8 LED overhead lights, two reading lights located on port and starboard, 2 opening ports, 2 opening forward windows and 5 fixed lights. Headroom in the saloon is 6’7”.

Nav station: The nav station is one step down from the saloon on port.  Forward facing, there is an ultra-suede seat and cushioned back rest. The chart table is spacious and easily accommodates a chart book, while beneath the table are three nice-sized drawers; above and forward is a fiddled shelf.  Electronics and numerous convenience receptacles are all within easy reach and mounted on custom fabric accent panels.  Beneath the seat is electrical equipment; outboard of the seat is a locker with a drop-down door panel and above that a cubby with a custom fiddle.  230V AC and 24VDC distribution panels are located behind plexiglass panels behind the helm seat. Headroom at the nav station is 6’8”. 

Workshop: The Oyster 53 has several options for this space, including a fourth cabin for crew quarters or a workshop configuration, which Solan has. Located just aft of the nav station on port, there is a bench-height workbench with a non-skid rubber surface and two pad eyes, should you need to secure a piece of equipment while underway.  There is a full width drawer below the workbench surface. Below that in the forward half is a washing machine, while aft of that is a drawer and an enormous storage locker that goes all the way to the hull.  Above the workbench on the aft end are two more storage lockers approximately 3’ deep.  The bench lip extends far enough to permit attachments of clamps and a vice if desired.  There is a fiddled grab rail the length of the cabin along the hull.    

At the aft end of the cabin is a locker containing the Racor filters, which makes changes a breeze.  There are two tall sound insulated door panels which provide wonderful access to the engine room.  Additional engine access can be found on the galley side of the boat.  

Lighting and ventilation are provided by one overhead light, one wall mounted light and two opening port holes.  Receptacles are provided for both US and Euro power. Headroom in here is 6’1”.

Galley: The galley is located on starboard in the corridor leading aft to the master stateroom.  Along centerline is a double stainless steel sink with a single lever water mixer.  There is fiddled counterspace on either side of the sink and shelf storage with sliding doors above the counter.  Beneath the counter top is a large pull-out drawer, a tip out trash bin locker and an access panel for the engine compartment.  Next aft is a tall utility locker with assorted hanging hooks and another locker above that.   

Along the hull side portion of the galley is a large top loading freezer with dual condenser plates.  Next aft is a four-burner stove and oven. Beneath the stove is storage space for flat items and a drop-front door locker beneath that.  Continuing aft, there is more counter space, with a pair of drawers and a pair of cabinets with shelves beneath that.  Behind the stove is a small fiddled shelf for spices and an opening port in the hullside. On either side of the window are a pair of lockers with selves, the aft one containing peg and mug organizers for the Oyster Wedgewood dinnerware.  Next aft is a large front-loading fridge, with lockers beneath and above it. Lighting and ventilation are provided by five overhead LED lights, and three opening ports. Headroom is 6’1”. 

Master stateroom: Entry into the master stateroom is on starboard aft of the galley.  The 77” x 62” island berth is offset to starboard and has a padded headboard.  The entire space beneath the berth is storage, including two full-width drawers at the foot of the bed.  Along the starboard hullside is a double doored hanging locker followed by a fiddled nightstand shelf. Below the shelf are double sliding door lockers and one locker above it.  

The port side of the stateroom has a curved seating area and a fiddled end table, with two drawers and a hinged door locker above it.  Both sides have opening ports, with custom fiddles built for storage of gear during passages on the shelf spaces beneath them.  Additionally, there are three opening portholes on the housetop and a large overhead hatch.  Either side of the berth has a Caframo fan, providing wonderful cross ventilation. There is a reading light on either side at the head of the bed.  Including the center section, there are three lee cloths for the berth.  On the forward wall of the cabin there are two bookshelves, with a large locker with shelf storage beneath the bookshelves. Entry to the ensuite head is on port; that door has a full-height dressing mirror. Lighting and ventilation are provided by the two LED reading lights, seven overhead lights, an overhead hatch, five opening ports, two fans and two dorade vents. Headroom is 6’2”

Master stateroom head: Looking into the aft head, the radiused sink and counter is directly ahead.  There is a locker beneath the sink and a mirrored door medicine cabinet above.  There is a second laminate front locker with shelves to the left of the medicine cabinet. The toilet is to your left and a separate stall shower with a bi-fold door is to your right.  Lighting and ventilation are from one opening porthole and three overhead LED lights. Head room is 6’1”.

The amount of spare parts on board this boat is incredible. The owners wanted to ensure that they were prepared for almost any systems failure by having the parts they would need on board. The vessel sustained above the waterline damage on the starboard side while racing in 2009.  Repairs were effected by Oyster in Southampton at which time the owner took the opportunity to have the boat significantly refitted.
