ADDITIONAL INFO

In the midrange of the Sun Odyssey line is a performance cruiser that can be ordered as basic as one might choose for day sailing on Chesapeake Bay. And it can also have all the options and feature packs offered by Jeanneau to be a fully equipped cruising sailboat to sail over the horizon. Following the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey philosophy, this boat proves you can have it your way.

At 38’6” overall with its jaunty bowsprit, the Marc Lombard design is typical of the five current models of Sun Odyssey sailboats. Inverted bow that sits just above the water at rest, a long chine that runs the full length of the hull for initial stability, and full beam taken all the way aft to a wide stern that is common on European sailboats of late. The wide stern necessitates use of twin rudders to keep at least one of the spade rudders fully immersed. The rudders are installed in self-aligning bearings and managed by textile lines for better feel than can be achieved with hydraulic steering. With composite wheels at the twin helms, steering is fingertip control at its best.

Other significant features of the Sun Odyssey line that one finds on the 380 include the breakthrough walk around side decks that allow crew to walk from cockpit around to the side decks without stepping over coaming or winches (often a precarious move under way), and lifelines atop bulwarks to provide great confidence on a boat this size. All sail handling lines and sheets are run aft to the cockpit, and the use of optional electric Harken winches makes single handing and short-handed sailing standard practice.

The Sun Odyssey 380 comes with three keel choices, as do the other Sun Odyssey yachts. There is a standard keel of 6’6”, a shoal draft keel of 5’3”, and a swing keel with a range of 8’10” to 4’3”. (The swing keel can be ordered with beaching legs so the boat can safely sit on the bottom at low tide.) Most sailors in the Chesapeake area will opt for the shoal draft. In fact, most East Coast boats are sold with the shoal draft keel. This is also a good choice for sailors with plans to eventually cruise the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and perhaps the Caribbean. Shoal draft makes sense, but all keels are available.

Standard power is a Yanmar 29hp diesel with traditional shaft drive. There is an optional 40hp diesel upgrade as well. The standard fixed blade propeller can be replaced with an optional folding propeller for increased efficiency and minimal-drag while sailing.

Today’s cruising sailboats are all about comfort, convenience, and sailing fun. All of Jeanneau’s Sun Odyssey line embrace these qualities, and the Sun Odyssey 380 is no exception. A wide swing-down transom transforms into a huge swim platform at anchor for easy access to the water and dinghy. Line and sail handling on deck do not require the

gymnastics expected from previous generations of sailors, as most everything is accomplished from the cockpit. Close quarter maneuvering in a marina is made easy with the inverted bow out of the water, optional bow thruster, and twin wheels that offer unparalleled visibility.

The Harken winches are placed so that the boat can be safely and easily sailed by a short-handed crew, and electric winches are an attractive option for older sailors and those with difficulty managing lines with standard winches.

It is just a few steps down into the saloon from the cockpit, and the angle of the stairs keeps it simple and relaxed. Even when the boat has a full dodger for weather protection, the open companionway allows crew in the cockpit and down below to stay in touch, and a crew member making lunch can continue engaging those in the cockpit and at the helm.

With several layouts available, the interior of the Sun Odyssey 380 is light, contemporary, and open. The use of light-colored fabric, numerous windows and ports, and an open layout is a welcome improvement over traditionally dark and disconnected spaces down below.

The standard boat has the owner cabin forward and a single cabin aft, and they share a large head and separate shower. Aft of the shower is a sail and workspace area that is accessible from the shower as well as an overhead cockpit locker.

Additional layouts include the same forward owner cabin and aft cabin arrangement but with two heads, another layout with forward owner cabin and two aft cabins, with one or two heads. No doubt one of these layouts will be the perfect choice for a couple, a small family, or those who cruise with friends.

Extensive options and equipment packages personalize each boat. Performance sails, in-mast furling, downwind sails and gear, higher performance rigging, electric winches, removable inner forestay, and more are options. There are anchoring and mooring packages, canvas bimini and enclosures, even navigation electronics can be selected in stages to fit the needs for now and in the future.

To assist putting together a boat that best fits one’s needs, Jeanneau relies on its dealers to work with buyers to navigate these choices.
