DESCRIPTION

Sun Odyssey 440’s high performance platform incorporates a full length, hard chined hull to promote fast cruising while minimizing heeling. The generous sail plan is easily handled by the inboard winches and lowered gooseneck height. Sailing this boat is an experience like none other. She is fast, powerful, and nimble on the wheel.

The 440 launched the proprietary Walk Around Decks, an incredible feature that has been incorporated in every successive design. This, combined with unobstructed side decks from bow to stern make movement on deck easier than ever before. The huge cockpit is perfect for entertaining guests, and the convertible cockpit lounge turns the aft eight feet of the boat into a gigantic sunpad!

The open concept interior is bathed in light, as the main salon features a multitude of windows and hatches. The central U-shaped galley is optimally placed for comfort while under way, centralizing the weight of the appliances for optimized sailing performance, as well as serving meals in the salon. In the 440, the nav station is particularly emphasized, elevating this feature into a coffee nook or home office.

ADDITIONAL INFO

One model of the Sun Odyssey series defines the entire line as a premier balanced and capable cruising sailboat. It is the Sun Odyssey 440. The 43-footer pulls it all together with ergonomic sizing of all spaces, right down to helm steering seats, roomy cockpit seating and lounge space, and saloon furniture that provides all the luxury and comfort one expects in a larger sailboat.

The Sun Odyssey 440 is a Jeanneau interpretation of a do-anything, go-anywhere cruising sailboat. And everything on the boat, from hull construction to installed systems and tankage, supports that statement.

With the same full-length hull chine found on all Sun Odyssey models, the 41’5” hull has the initial stability and improved speed one expects for a longer waterline. This length also settles the boat and is more predictable when handled by a short-handed crew. The 14-foot beam is carried all the way aft, which increases sailing speed and control from the dual spade rudders and twin helms. The rudders are in self-aligning roller bearings and the twin helms allow unprecedented visibility and control when sailing at speed.

The walk around side decks is another Sun Odyssey standard feature, offering a high degree of safe, comfortable movement by the crew. With all lines coming back into the cockpit area, the Harken winches, blocks, tracks, and deck hardware give one the ability to sail this boat fast and safe, bringing in a higher level of fun to the sailing experience.

Jeanneau offers a number of performance sailing packs, equipment, and trim options to outfit each boat to the specific needs of the owners. This might include a taller mast and rigging for best performance available from this performance-oriented cruising sailboat. The Sun Odyssey 440 will always be one of the fastest boats in its size range, and the ability to improve this inherent performance even more through additional options and gear choices, further enhances the sailing excellence. Annapolis-to-Newport anyone?

Jeanneau depends on its dealers to assist buyers to determine and select the right options, layouts, and sailing equipment to tailor each boat to how it will be used. For the MidAtlantic region, this is Crusader Yachts, based in Annapolis. Its experienced staff of brokers are ready to walk each prospective buyer through the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey lineup and discuss the many ways one finds the best balance between sailing performance and functional utility. Choosing the standard deep draft keel is one way to seek the highest performance, but the limitations of sailing such a boat on Chesapeake Bay, the Florida Keys, and the Bahamas dictate a buyer is better off choosing the shoal-draft keel, with little if any loss of upwind performance. Your Crusader broker will be most helpful in this kind of

discussion, as well as exploring taller mast options that could restrict future travel due to fixed bridges commonly found on the East Coast.

There are four layouts available for the Sun Odyssey 440. The standard two-cabin layout has two heads (Version A), with the owner’s cabin forward. The aft cabin is on the starboard side at the stern, and there is a storage and “workshop” located behind the chart table on the port side. It can be set up for a washer/dryer and/or extra refrigeration or a freezer.

Additional layouts include two aft cabins (giving up the workshop space), and one or two forward cabins (ideal for charter use). For family cruising, one of these layouts with aft cabins is sure to fit the needs of most family and friends. There is a layout that will prove perfect for years to come.

The long list of options on all Jeanneau Sun Odysseys provide a level of customization that is attractive to buyers with some ideas of where they want to go. Once again, the value of the Crusader team during this process cannot be overstated. Its long history with outfitting Jeanneau sailboats for Chesapeake cruising and beyond gives the broker team valuable insight as to the best gear and equipment choices. Sometimes it makes the most sense to outsource locally (Annapolis is the sailing capital of the country, so has every kind of marine company and service one might desire). The Crusader team can manage all aspects of these aftermarket installations.

The boat comes standard with a Yanmar 45hp diesel engine with traditional shaft drive, turning a fixed, three-blade propeller. Among the many options for the Sun Odyssey 440 are a larger, Yanmar 57hp diesel and additional fuel tankage for increased self-sufficiency when gunkholing in the islands. A folding propeller is another popular option for maximum sailing efficiency.

The boat interior comes with a choice of teak laminated woodwork and light oak laminated flooring, or a lighter cedar mat finish interior with a darker oak flooring. The trim and other finishes combine for a contemporary, bright interior that takes advantage of the numerous ports, hatches, and skylights for a decidedly modern living atmosphere that appeals more than the traditional dark sailboat interiors of past generations.

Some believe that a larger sailboat is more difficult to sail and handle under power than a smaller boat. The Sun Odyssey 440 proves just how wrong that sentiment is. The boat is easier to sail in many ways, as it is not easily upset and remains controllable as it is slower to react to a strong puff. On the water this gives crew time to shorten sail when the wind pipes up. The boat will maintain momentum into head seas and contrary winds and will be docile inside a protected marina, as one stops along a fairway while deciding the best approach to an awkward slip location.

Another positive aspect of a larger boat is that accessibility is generally better on a larger boat. Owners and service technicians can inspect, service, and repair all of the machinery and systems on the boat better than when faced with servicing the same equipment on smaller vessels. That is true for refrigeration, air conditioning, watermaker, stuffing box, freshwater plumbing, and the ever-important running gear. Access to all systems is important for routine maintenance on every cruising boat, whether it is owner maintained or performed by local service yards.

And, of course, wintertime living on the Sun Odyssey 440 down in the Florida Keys will be a wonderful experience, as space and storage is not the tight compromise often endured on smaller boats.

Some other big boat features, such as a retractable bow thruster and in-mast furling for the mainsail, are attractive incentives for some buyers who love the room and comfort of Sun Odyssey 440, but also want all the control assistance they can get to keep things simple, less effort, and more fun.

When one decides to explore the benefits of owning a Sun Odyssey 440, the Crusader team is there every step of the way from initial order through inspection and delivery, and anything that is needed later on. Which is most helpful, as some equipment does not make sense to install when first buying a new boat with the intention to gain experience in Chesapeake Bay. The self sufficiency of a lithium-ion electrical and battery system is best considered when there is long-term cruising on the program, not for weekends while learning to sail close to home. A watermaker is another example that is not a good fit for occasional use on the Chesapeake. But when it is time to prepare for cruising down island in a year or two, it is one of the best systems to add to your boat. No problem. The in-house service department at Crusader Yachts is there when it is required for all owner needs, now and in the future. The experienced techs are familiar with adding such systems when preparing a boat for island cruising. (They typically leave space dedicated for these future add-on systems when they first outfit the new boat.)

The Sun Odyssey 440 is a boat that can do it all, and your Crusader broker will be more than happy to show you all the reasons why it is worth serious consideration. Properly outfitted with dodger, dinghy, and the right sail package and gear to provide the sailing experience of a lifetime, the Sun Odyssey will be the right choice for years to come, whether one cruises the islands, New England, or simply enjoys all the cruising possibilities right here on Chesapeake Bay.

And Crusader Yachts is your partner when planning all your sailing and boating adventures.
