Mackinwa City, Michigan $74,900

DESCRIPTION

The 1979 Morgan 462 Ketch Sailboat is a classic example of robust and versatile cruising design from the late 20th century. Known for its strong build and spacious interior, this model features a sturdy fiberglass hull and a traditional ketch rig that provides excellent balance and ease of handling, particularly in varied wind conditions. The interior layout is designed for extended voyages, offering comfortable accommodations with a well-appointed galley, generous living space, and ample storage. The Morgan 46 is celebrated for its seaworthiness and has remained a popular choice among sailors who appreciate its blend of performance and comfort.

Here is an excerpt from the owner:

"I bought this 1979 boat when it was 18 months old in 1981 and the first year kept it at Toledo Beach Marina in southern Michigan and sailed Lake Erie. Between 1981 and 1989 I sailed Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and the Canadian North channel. In April 1989, I began a circumnavigation via the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal touching a couple dozen countries, arriving back in Michigan in July 1991. Since then I've cruised out of Cheboygan Michigan in Lake Huron.

I've added solar panels in 1984 or so, and doubled up the upper shrouds and added an additional forestay. I spent $25,000 I think in 2016 replacing all the electronics including the auto pilot, radar, depth sounder, entertainment center, and VHF radio. And added the latest Garmin chart plotter. I added a deck washer pump recently and a propane leak detector system. When necessary, I would replace sails and all the canvas work. Over the course of 43 years I have upgraded replaced and maintained everything on the boat."

morgan history

The designer, Henry Scheel, was also the builder of the original molds for this yacht at his company in Maine in the early 1970’s. (Sheel had collaborated with Charles Morgan on a number of the earlier Morgan’s.)

The molds later came into the possession of Morgan Yachts, where they were used for a number of years with various modifications to build a number of models similar to the one shown here.

manufacturer's description

The Morgan 46 is the queen of our Morgan series of high performance cruising yachts. As queen, this regal lady of the seas exemplifies the design concepts built into the entire Morgan series. She is fast and dry beating to windward, and still out points all but the sleekest racers, even in the roughest of seas. Off the wind, she glides with ease and comfort on her long, directionally stable water line. These fine sailing characteristics are equally matched by her spacious, well laid out interior. An interior designed for a couple or a group of up to nine to spend many happy days sailing wherever they set their sights in this world class cruiser.

The Deck: She features a low center cockpit for ultimate visibility; lots of hatches: fourteen opening ports; and two large lazarettes aft. There is also a large emergency exit that can serve as a private entrance to the owner's stateroom.

Interior: A Teak and Holly plydeck sole runs throughout. Three private staterooms are standard. Each of the two large heads are complete with showers, with a tub included in the master stateroom head. The galley is a cook's delight. U-Shaped for comfort and convenience under way, the galley abounds with counter and storage space. Twin deep stainless steel sinks and a huge 19 cu. ft. top load ice box with two lids lead a long list of highlights. The open main salon is designed for comfortable entertaining, doubling as a dinette or extra berths as needed. The navigation station will please the most discriminating, with plenty of space to house the equipment necessary to take your yacht anywhere in the world. At the heart of this yacht is a dual access engine room, housing a powerful Perkins diesel while leaving plenty of room for accessories including an optional 7.5 KW generator.

Systems: All the plumbing is polybutylene tubing and rigid PVC. All the wiring is color coded to the recommended American Boat and Yacht Council standards and wired through a custom 115V AC, 12V DC modular electrical panel which contains hydraulic/magnetic breakers. The large fuel and water tanks make long extended passages a cinch. The easily adjusted main sheet traveler and three-speed Lewmar sheet winches make sail handling a joy. The optional Hyde rod roller furling system makes sail handling even easier, especially for short-handed crews.

Construction: The deck and hull are both hand laminated solid fiberglass with added sandwiched plywood coring in the deck. The keel houses internal cast lead ballast which is grouted around and fully glassed-over for the extra protection afforded by this double bottom effect. All cabinetry and bulkheads are double bonded to the hull sides for their entire length with a heavy 20-oz. woven roving. To create a unitized construction system for additional strength and stiffness all cabinetry components are also bonded to each other. In addition, all exposed metals below the waterline are bronze to resist electrolysis.
