overview

RANGER is a replica of the "Super J-Class" yacht which successfully defended the Americas Cup in 1937 with a 4-0 win over the British yacht Endeavor II. The original RANGER was massive in sail area and volume with a steel hull and true to her classic lineage, the current RANGER is the largest volume of any of the “J-Class” yachts. The successful build of the current 136’ RANGER replica, launched by Danish Yachts in 2003 was the result of a passionate yachtsman’s vision and helped relaunch the “J-Class” as a successful fleet honoring this majestic 1930’s era in yachting history. Naval architects Studio Scanu, Reichel-Pugh, and Fred Elliott worked with the original lines of Starling Burgess and Sparkman and Stephens to create a “Super J” that not only wins in regattas, but cruises in style as a proper luxury yacht.

RANGER was designed and built with a steel hull and deck making her extremely stiff and strong in all and any conditions. Since her initial launching in 2003, there have been several refit efforts to reduce tonnage and thereby increase performance in varied conditions. The latest was a very comprehensive restoration and refit completed in Holland at Vitter’s Shipyard in 2019 for her current owner. Veteran J-Class Captain, Greg Sloat and his team managed a 16-month redesign of her deck layout and technical spaces encompassing every system aboard the yacht. The result reduced RANGER by 6 tons in the ends, ballast and aloft, where it matters most, and streamlined and renewed the expansive teak deck for more efficient sailing as well as much more comfortable and safe owner areas. All machinery was “0” hour rebuilt, and all systems upgraded. The hydraulic system that powers the sail handing systems supercharged to handle her vast sail area in all conditions. Hydraulics updated to 560L/min flow and 250 bars of pressure. Can be controlled with custom PLC system both below deck and on deck. It has multiple modes for racing plus cruising to customize flows and pressures for each instance. The central guest cockpit and doghouse were redesigned and rebuilt enhancing owner enjoyment areas on deck. The interior design includes the only J-Class yacht with 4 double owner/guest staterooms plus room for up to 8 crew. The interior boasts timeless elegance in high gloss book matched raised panel mahogany that is superbly detailed and maintained. Countless hours were spent on fitting modern technologies and living concepts in a vintage designed sailing yacht that conformed to the J-Class Association’s rules and regulations. She is the epitome of a "spirit of tradition" yacht and now fully renovated to exacting standards all approved and compliant to Lloyds Classification standards.
